The Rhinos looked down and out when they trailed 18-6 at half-time - but they turned the game on its head with four tries in the opening 16 minutes of the second period. Scrum-half Ryan Sheridan led the way to inflict a second successive home defeat on the Broncos. Leeds got off to a bad start when Tony Martin kicked the Broncos ahead after eight minutes. But the visitors hit back on 14 minutes when Mark Calderwood raced down the right wing from Tonie Carroll's pass. Ben Walker added the goal.
Broncos seized control of the game, however, and were back in the lead after 19 minutes, when Martin burst through the defence to collect Rob Purdham's kick before adding the goal himself. Three minutes later scrum-half Dennis Moran intercepted a Walker pass to run the length of the field before touching down. Martin added the goal. Moran was provider for the Broncos' next score on 31 minutes when Sylvain forced his way over the line from close range. Martin, however, brought a run of 29 successive goals to an end by pushing his kick wide of the post. The Rhinos, led by Sheridan, opened the second half with a 40-20, a sign of things to come. Two minutes later Willie Poching intercepted a slack pass before Walker sent in Marcus St Hilaire.
Five minutes later Wayne McDonald forced his way over the line after Sheridan's second 40-20 kick of the half. Walker was successful with the goal. On 51 minutes the visitors regained the lead when Carroll burst through before passing to Walker on his inside, who touched down. Walker then kicked the goal. Leeds put further daylight between themselves and the home side when Carroll steamrollered his way over the whitewash from Rob Burrow's pass. Broncos refused to lie down and as they came back into the game, took maximum advantage of St Hilaire missing Steele Retchless's kick allowing Mat Toshack to touch down and Martin was again successful with his kick. Normal service was resumed for the visitors after 67 minutes when Sheridan ran in under the posts after the Broncos were penalised close to their own line. Walker was again successful with his boot. |
