Lockyer was a key creative figure on his return from injury | Australia prepared for next week's Tri-Nations final against Great Britain with a hard-fought 52-30 victory over a defiant France in Toulouse. Marshalled by Australian coach Mick Aldous, the French team raced away with three tries in the opening 20 minutes. Maxime Gresseque was the inspiration, a deft pass and precise kick setting up two tries and he notched the third. Australia responded with three tries in just eight minutes, and after a French revival, broke clear again late on. Skipper Darren Lockyer was the creator of the first three Australian tries, showing no ill effects as he returned from injury. In a remarkable contest of try scoring flurries, the French reduced the deficit and were only four points behind with 14 minutes remaining after another burst of three tries. Then the visitors settled things once and for all, stepping up a gear with three more tries in the final 10 minutes.
