Smith (centre) guided the Lions to a 3-0 series win |
Great Britain boss Tony Smith said his players showed real courage as they fought back from two early tries to beat New Zealand 28-22 on Saturday. "I am really pleased, for the players and the country," said Smith, whose side won the previous Test 44-0.
"We have done well, we had to grind it out in a different way and show some real guts and determination.
"We didn't get any breaks and spent the whole of the first half in our own half but my boys handled it really well."
The Great Britain team is now being mothballed as the Lions split into the home nations, with Smith taking charge of England, who will mirror this Lions squad in composition.
Smith stressed he was pleased his charges had been given a proper work-out.
"I think it is good for the future - another blow-out wouldn't have been great for us," said the Australian.
"It shows we can handle these close games and come from behind. Those last 10 minutes before half-time showed how determined we were to get back in front.
"We showed what are made of, and they should be proud of themselves."
Great Britain captain Jamie Peacock said: "It has been a tough week, and this was a tough game for us.
"The Kiwis came out and showed some fight - and we had to show some mental toughness to get back in the game. But we knew it could be done."
