Hendry rightfully took his place in snooker's Hall of Fame |
Hendry's dominance at the Crucible continued as his 18-12 victory over Peter Ebdon gave him a sixth world title, equalling the modern day record of Ray Reardon and Steve Davis. Ebdon had played superbly to reach the final but was suffering an understandable degree of burnout after three emotionally draining victories.
He edged Crucible favourite Jimmy White 13-12 in the last 16, shook off Steve Davis 13-10 in the quarter-finals and completed a dramatic 16-14 win against Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last four.
In contrast, Hendry barely broke sweat after recovering from 6-3 down to beat Jason Ferguson 10-8 in the first round.
The main focus off-table was whether O'Sullivan would be disqualified from the championship after assaulting a tournament press officer.
At a hastily convened disciplinary meeting, O'Sullivan was fined 30,000 and given a two year suspended ban.
