Favourites Lesley McKenna and Dom Harington took the half-pipe titles at the Orange British Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships.

But Richard Taylor produced a shock in the skiing big air competition with a huge 900-degree rotation to win.

Taylor only clipped on a pair of skis for the first time last year.

He said: "I just came here to enjoy myself and check out the scene. I think I'll enter a lot more ski competitions from now on."

The Welshman from Barry is a professional in-line skater, who learns his tricks on a trampoline in his back garden.

The 22-year-old added: "The tricks are very similar whether you're skiing or skating but I was certainly not expecting to win the big air."

McKenna won the women's half-pipe title for the sixth year running.

I'm really confident about next season and need to do well because it is an Olympic qualifying year

But the Olympic and World Cup star admitted the competition had been the hardest she had entered all season because of the deteriorating weather conditions of heavy snow and low cloud.

The 30-year-old, from Aviemore in Scotland, said: "The pipe was really good but because of the snow it was slow which made it quite difficult to pull off the tricks.

"It was not the best performance I have ever done but I was pleased to have competed and thought the standard of the female riders was really good."

McKenna finished third in this year's World Cup half-pipe, a fantastic achievement considering she missed six weeks of the season because of a broken jaw sustained in a training accident.

She said: "I honestly believe I would have won the World Cup title had I not broken my jaw.

"I'm really confident about next season and need to do well because it is an Olympic qualifying year."

I am in quite a lot of debt from the competition circuit so I need to combine my time training and working in the summer

Harrington stormed to the men's half-pipe title after the judges gave him the top marks for all three criteria, amplitude, rotation and overall style.

The 19-year-old from Leeds said: "I'm really stoked to win it because it's my first British title.

"I had to change my routine in the second run and do a less difficult trick because of the weather so was really pleased to win the title."

Harrington made his debut on the World Cup circuit this year but will go back to his day job as a shop assistant in Castleford when the season is over.

He said: "Although I have sponsors, I am in quite a lot of debt from the competition circuit so I need to combine my time training and working in the summer."
