He may only be small in stature but Murray Buchan is a big name in the British snowsports world.

The 12-year-old Scot has already won the kids slopestyle and skiercross events at the Orange British Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships and he is gunning for more glory.

Buchan is a real talent whose skiing capability is well advanced for his young years.

He combines his schoolwork with competing at freestyle ski events around Europe, with his father Michael as his chaperone.

Speaking in Les Deux Alpes, Buchan told the BBC Sport website: "If I have to be away from school to compete then I am given work to do while I'm away, so it's not all play!"

He competes in all four freestyle disciplines: slopestyle, skiercross, big air and half-pipe.

Buchan said: "I enjoy doing them all but slopestyle is my favourite because it is much more flowing."

While most children Buchan's age choose to learn snowboarding, the Edinburgh-based youngster is firmly a huge ski fan.

He said: "I can snowboard but I much prefer skiing. You can do more with skiing and go a lot faster."

Buchan only began skiing when he was six at the artificial slope in Hillend in Edinburg but his natural talent saw him progress quickly from the pistes onto the freestyle scene.

FREESTYLE EXPLAINED
Skiercross: downhill race over jumps and banked turns, similar to motorcross
Half-pipe: riders/skiers head into a u-shaped pipe and perform tricks off the wall
Big air: competitors reach speeds up upto 60mph before launching themselves off a wedge to perform tricks upto 25 feet in the air
Slopestyle: Riders/skiers perform a variety of tricks over course of obstacles including jumps and rails

Sponsors have already spotted his potential and Buchan himself is in no doubt where he would like his career to go.

He added: "I want to be competing on the World Cup tour as soon as I'm old enough. It is a dream of mine to take part in the X Games and the Winter Olympics would be great too."

It was the second day of competition in France and the events progressed despite being hampered by snow and cloud.

The men's skiercross title went to Henry Taylor from Leeds, who was competing in the discipline for the first time although he is a former British racer.

Noddy Gowans, more well known for his big mountain riding, was second and Sheffield's Pete Thelwell was third.

In the women's final, favourite Abi Pickett was disqualified for a false start, together with Faith Dyer.

It meant wildcard Anya Rees-Jones from Lewes in East Sussex was declared the winner and claims the British title with Lizzie Cranfield, also from Lewes, finishing second.

Results:

Men's skiercross:
1 Henry Taylor
2 Noddy Gowans
3 Pete Thelwell

Women's skiercross:
