Warrsan won by a length and a half |
The outsider Warrsan continued trainer Clive Brittain's good run of form with victory in the Sagitta Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
The five-year-old, who went off at 12-1, ridden by Philip Robinson held on well to edge out 7-2 third favourite Millenary by a length and a half with Frankie Dettori's mount Highest a further four lengths back.
The 15-8 favourite Bandari, third in last year's St Leger, set a blistering pace early on but Robinson kept his mount in touch.
Bandari's fast pace caught up with him in the closing four furlongs as first Millenary and then Warrsan outpaced him.
The pair battled it out but Warrsan finished best to give Brittain his second notable victory after Camp Commander took the Victoria Cup at Ascot on Wednesday.
It was an excellent victory for Warrsan, who claimed his first Group victory at Newbury last month
"At Newbury we were forced to make the running and today we decided if there was no pace we'd make it but plan B came into use," said Brittain after the race.
"We knew there would be a front-runner so we decided to sit in behind until we were prepared to go for it."
Earlier, the 4-1 chance Delsarte, trained by Mark Johnston, followed up his win at Leicester last Saturday with victory in the Newmarket Stakes.
Only four went to post for the mile and a quarter event and 6-4 favourite Wilful, ridden by Frankie Dettori made much of the running until the final furlong.
Although Pat Eddery challenged on Hilbre Island, Keith Dalgleish got a better response from the eventual winner who lengthened well to sweep by the pair and quickly pull five lengths clear.
