17 ran.

Frankie Dettori rode Kazzia to victory in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday.

Godolphin's Kazzia won the fillies' Classic by a short head from Snowfire with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Alasha getting up for third.

Dettori urged Kazzia in front from the three furlong mark and the pair held off Pat Eddery on the 28-1 outsider Snowfire.

The difference in the going from one side of the course to the other that hampered Saturday's 2,000 Guineas was largely removed by narrowing the Rowley Mile track.

The winning jockey was delighted that his mount was able to hold of her main challengers once she found herself in the frame.

"She's a very tough filly," said Dettori.

"She didn't have the best trip back from Dubai and it was always ifs and buts as to whether she was going to run.

"The team have done a great job to get her back in one piece and I knew she would stay.

"Basically from the three I said 'come on, let's go - come and get me'.

"My filly stays beyond a mile and I knew if it came to a battle I would battle them out of it."

The winning trainer Saeed Bin Suroor was relieved to have secured his yard's first Classic in two years.

"That's a long time for the quality of horses we have," he said.

Five-day ban

Luca Cumani's impressive two-year-old Gossamer was promoted to 11-8 favourite after the withdrawal of Queen's Logic, who failed to recover in time after being found lame on Saturday.

But Jamie Spencer's mount failed to stage a challenge.

"She was very disappointing and never going like a winner," said Spencer.

"I knew half-a-mile out that she was in trouble. Maybe the ground had a bit to do with it."

Johnny Murtagh's 6-1 rated Alasha, a fast-finishing fourth in the Nell Gwyn, struggled with the Rowley Mile dip.

She then found herself boxed in before clashing with Dolores in the run for home, earning Murtagh a one-day ban for careless riding.

Meanwhile, Eddery was banned for five days for excessive use of the whip on Snowfire to add to the one-day ban he got for failing to keep straight after the start in an earlier race.

He will miss all three days of the York Dante meeting and Newbury's two-day fixture featuring the Group One Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes.
