| Elusive City takes Richmond Stakes Elusive City leads home the field Elusive City, ridden by Kieren Fallon, won the Richmond Stakes by three lengths at Goodwood on Tuesday. The 9-2 priced horse came from nowhere with one-and-a-half furlongs to go, taking the lead from Revenue and The Bonus King who had shared it for much of the opening stages. Behind Elusive City was Revenue (12-1) in second and then Checkit (20-1) in third, just ahead of fourth-placed Hurricane Alan. Elusive City was sweating up in the parade but composed himself for the race.
Winning trainer Gerard Butler said: "He was getting a bit warm beforehand but Kieren kept a lid on him. "He is a big guy but he's worth all of the hassle. Goodwood wouldn't be the easiest place for him, he hasn't seen many horses before and we've brought him here to centre stage. "Once he got out on to the racecourse he was cool, calm and collected. "Being drawn on the outside as he was and with plenty of pace in the race, we felt it would be a bad idea to try to go with them early on as he might just burn out. "He has not had any big entries made for him because doing so with a horse like him puts pressure on everyone, including me. "We shall take him home now and see how he goes in the next two or three weeks. "The Middle Park is the big objective as long as all goes well." |
