The first timing point is marked by a memorial to Steve Fairbairn, an Australian who rowed for Cambridge in the 1880s and then went on to become a famous, if sometimes controversial, coach.
A great innovator, Fairbairn revolutionised both rowing and training methods, and the memorial was built to commemorate the establishment in 1934 of the Head of the River Race. This is a timed event for 420 eights racing on the ebb tide from Mortlake to Putney that is traditionally held the Saturday before the Boat Race.
