Merlin Diamond sparkles in 2012 campaign

Sat 24 Feb 12: Merlin Diamond finished second in the 100m at the Namibian Championships with time of 12.25 seconds.

Tue 21 Feb 12: After a frustrating layoff with injury, Merlin Diamond has returned to competitive sprinting with a personal best in the 100m.

Merlin won the 100m event at the Khomas Region Trials in 11.7 secs. However, to qualify for London 2012 Merlin still needs to run the Olympic Standard which is 11.38 secs.

Wed 20 Jul 12: Merlin Diamond has told the BBC of her frustration at training far from home on an island in the Indian ocean.

The lonely island

Her dream may be "to be the first Namibian to bring a gold medal home," but she told our reporter about her experience of attending at a training base in Mauritius: "Sometimes I cry just to get some relief from being here alone".

Wed 23 Feb 11: Merlin secured golds in the 100m and 200m sprints at a tri-nation meeting held in Luanda, Angola (The Namibian).

Mon 7 Feb 11: On her first visit to the UK, Merlin Diamond was given a tour of the Olympic Stadium by Matthew Pinsent.

She also visited Calderglen High School and Scotstoun Sports Campus in Glasgow, where Team Namibia will be based ahead of the Games in July 2012.

LATEST NEWS - 2010

Wed 17 Nov 10: Merlin Diamond is one of five Namibian athletes who have won a bursary (Namibia Sport) from the International Olympic Council's development fund, Olympic Solidarity.

Secretary general of the Namibia Olympic Committee, Abner Xoagub, said Merlin would be based at a high performance centre in Mauritius where she would be put on an intense training programme to prepare for the London Olympics.

Wed 28 Jul 10: Injury has forced Merlin Diamond to withdraw from Namibia's African Athletics Championships team that is preparing to compete in Nairobi, Kenya.
