Bristol's Chris Wood shot a level par second round at Royal Birkdale to keep alive his goal to finish as leading amateur at the Open.

The 20-year-old birdied the 18th to finish with a round of 70, just five shots off the clubhouse lead.

"It was unbelievable chipping in like that on the last in front of all those people," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I wasn't quite as nervous on the first tee this morning, as I was used to the surroundings a bit more."

I thought if I could break par I could have a chance of winning the whole thing.

Wood's father Richard is acting as his caddy this week, with his mother and aunt among a big group of family and friends in the crowd cheering him on.

"A lot of my friends from back home in Nailsea, all my family, and it seems about half of my golf club at Long Ashton - the support has been amazing," he added.

Wood's five-over-par means he can look forward to extending his tournament, and after sampling life amongst the professionals the Bristol man has set his targets high.

"I thought if I could break par I could have a chance of winning the whole thing.

"Me and my coach talked about three sub-par rounds and I wasn't quite there, but I'll try and go better at the weekend."

But the level-headed amateur says he is trying not to get overwhelmed by all the media attention coming his way.

"That will be nice to see, but I have to play Saturday and Sunday and then look at everything next week.

"I've got a slight tweak in my back so I will get that sorted out this afternoon."
