Furyk leads Woods again
US Open champion Jim Furyk
Furyk lies three strokes off the lead after round one
US Open champion Jim Furyk ensured Tiger Woods remained out of the spotlight again after the opening round of the Buick Classic.

Just four days after Furyk claimed his first major title, he carded an opening 67 at the Westchester Country Club.

That was one stroke better than Woods and three behind first-round leader Briny Baird.

Baird shot a career-best 63 to take a three-stroke lead over Furyk and Joey Sindelar.

Woods was unhappy with his effort, which followed a disappointing four days at Olympia Fields.

First round leaders
63 - Briny Baird (USA)
66 - Jim Furyk (USA), Joey Sindelar (USA)
67 - Retief Goosen (Rsa), Shigeki Maruyama (Jpn), Tiger Woods (USA)
"It could have been a lot better," said Woods, who was five under after 10 holes.

"I really had some chances to increase it, but instead it went the other way."

Furyk insists there will be no after-effects from his US Open victory.

"I got three really good nights of sleep after hardly sleeping at all Sunday, so I'm well-rested," said Furyk.

"I haven't run out of steam yet, and my game physically is in good shape. As long as I keep concentrating well, I'll be in good shape."

Retief Goosen and Shigeki Maruyama also managed rounds of 67, with Open champion Ernie Els another stroke back.

Sergio Garcia, who is aiming to regain the title he won in 2001, shot a wildly inconsistent 70.
