 Sorenstam |
Annika Sorenstam beat Grace Park on the first hole of a play-off to win her first LPGA Championship and her fifth Major. The Swedish world number one took a four-stroke lead into the final round at a wet DuPont Country Club.
But she shot a one-over-par 72 while South Korean Park fired a four-under 67 to leave both players on six under.
In the sudden death play-off, Park came up short of the 18th green and missed a 12-foot par putt.
This is the title I really wanted to win |
Sorenstam hit a six-iron to 20 feet and tapped in her par putt to claim victory.
"This is amazing," said Sorenstam after clinching her 45th LPGA career title and a 160,000 first prize.
"This is the title I really wanted to win. I was focusing on the Majors this year and it feels so good to have pulled it off.
"It came down to the last hole and it was exciting but I made it when I needed to," she added.
Rosie Jones (71), Rachel Teske (71) and Beth Daniel (72) tied for third but were six shots adrift of the leading pair.
Becky Morgan of Wales, who had a career best tie for third behind Sorenstam in Chicago last week, finished in a tie for sixth place.
A victory in this summer's Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes would make Sorenstam the fourth woman in the modern era to complete the career Grand Slam.
