Garrido triumphs after play-off

Ignacio Garrido
Garrido had some fortune

Ignacio Garrido beat Trevor Immelman in a sudden-death play-off to win the Volvo PGA Championship.

The Spaniard, whose career has been in the doldrums for the last five years, birdied the first extra hole, the 18th, while his South African opponent missed a five-foot putt to keep the match alive.

Garrido enjoyed a large slice of fortune on the extra hole, his wayward second hitting a tree and landing in play, just 20 yards from the pin.

From there, he chipped to two feet and holed confidently.

The pair were tied in regulation play after Immelman closed with two birdies to get to 18 under.

Garrido, a member of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup side at Valderama in 1997, had not won since the German Open the same year.

"I expected some results this year but not like this," he said. "I'm really happy it came together here.

"Apart from the Majors this is one of the best tournaments to win. Trevor played a great tournament but thankfully I was a bit better."

Immelman insisted that despite the defeat, his performance had boosted his confidence for the rest of the year.

"I'm a little bit disappointed to have shot the round I did yesterday and play well today, only to finish with a three putt," he said.

"It's nice to be in the hunt again. It's what I put all the work in for.

"I definitely feel I can play well when it matters and I'll go into my first US Open with some good form."

England's Barry Lane set a promising clubhouse lead at 13-under after a storming 67.

The 42-year-old, searching for a first win since 1994, compiled a bogey-free round to give himself a chance as the rain became heavier.

Lane set off with five pars before picking up shots at the sixth and seventh to go out in 33.

Further birdies at the 11th, 12th and 14th advanced his cause but pars at the finishing par fives pegged him back.

Ernie Els struggled with a cold all week but put up a strong challenge on his local course to finish on 14-under.

The world number two compiled a round of 69 but was unable to inject any real momentum into his final round.

The South African started steadily and picked up his first birdie at the fourth before parring the next seven.

He made another breakthrough at 12 but was unable to forge further inroads into the leaders until the 18th when he finally landed another birdie.

Darren Clarke saw his halfway lead wiped out on Saturday and he failed to mount a fighting comeback on Sunday.

The Ulsterman began at nine-under, five shots back, but was only able to gain one stroke with a lacklustre 71.

Clarke's mixed round included five bogeys and six birdies.

The 34-year-old was adamant that his new fitness campaign and energy-food diet would help him focus to the end but poor putting held him back.

Colin Montgomerie's final-day challenge failed to ignite as he carded a steady 69 to finish on 11-under-par.

The Scot, eight-under and six shots off the lead overnight, had left himself a mountain to climb.

But two birdies inside the first four holes suggested the he was in the mood to stage a surging finale.

A bogey checked his progress at the ninth and despite making birdies at the par-five 12th and the long 18th, he was unable to make further inroads.

Nick Faldo's hopes of a first win since 1997 were ruined with a poor finish as he ended on 11-under after a 70.

The four-time PGA champion was in touch at the start of the day as he harboured hopes of a famous victory.

The 45-year-old was pegged back early on with a bogey at the third but two straight birdies put him back on track.

He made further gains at the 10th and 12th but missed a short birdie putt at 14 and bogeyed 15.
