ALL THE ACTION AS IT HAPPENED
FULL TIME Ten-man Italy are through to the last eight after Francesco Totti scores an injury time penalty. Disaster for Australia, who may live to regret not going for the jugular with Italy down to 10 men. Only 44% of you think it was a penalty.
90+ mins:GOAL Italy 1-0 Australia
Francesco Totti puts his penalty away and Italy go through to the last eight.
90+ mins: Fabio Grosso is brought down by Lucas Neill and Italy are awarded a penalty.
90 mins: Gianluca Zambrotta is booked for walking off with the ball after the referee has whistled.
89 mins: John Aloisi goes for an outrageous overhead but doesn't make contact.
88 mins: Gennaro Gattuso is booked for a foul on Scott Chipperfield. The Aussies still aren't showing much ambition and look to have frozen with the last eight in their sights.
86 mins: Simone Perrotta, surrounded by Australia defenders, somehow manages to get the ball to Vincenzo Iaquinta in the Aussie box, but the Udinese striker is unable to get much purchase on the shot.
84 mins: Mark Viduka scraps for a free ball in the Italian box but is unable to get a shot away.
83 mins: Marco Bresciano comes off the right flank and has a dart - but his left-foot shot goes well over. The feeling is that Australia could win this - if only they had the confidence.
81 mins: John Aloisi replaces Mile Sterjovski up front for Australia.
80 mins: Tim Cahill connects with an in-swinging corner from Marco Bresciano but his header goes just over. The Everton man should have done better.
77 mins: Francesco Totti gives the ball away in front of his own goal and Marco Bresciano fires in a weak shot which Gianluigi Buffon gathers up easily.
"Australia just aren't threatening enough at the moment - I think they've got to get the big lad Josh Kennedy on to give them something extra up front."
Chris Waddle, Radio Five Live
74 mins: Roma skipper Francesco Totti replaces the woeful Alessandro Del Piero, who looks half the player he used to be.
71 mins: 67% of you think Australia should go for the jugular and bring on another striker in John Aloisi, 17% think target man Josh Kennedy should be thrown on.
68 mins: The last time Italy had a man sent off in the second round of the World Cup, Francesco Totti against South Korea in 2002, they went on to lose.
65 mins: Andrea Pirlo bends in a free-kick which Mark Schwarzer tips over the bar with some ease.
63 mins: Gennaro Gattuso breaks and has Vincenzo Iaquinta and Alessandro Del Piero to aim for in the box, but his cross misses both of them.
60 mins: Luke Wilkshire is booked for a challenge on Alessandro Del Piero.
59 mins: Tim Cahill picks up on a bouncing ball in the Italy box but his hooked shot hits Mark Viduka's arm.
58 mins: Scott Chipperfield turns in the Italy area and his shot is punched away by Gianluigi Buffon. The Aussies can sense a famous victory now.
55 mins: Marcello Lippi is forced to shuffle his pack in the wake of Marco Materazzi's dismissal and brings on Andrea Barzagli for the hapless Luca Toni. Australia have the bit between their teeth now.
"An absolutely astounding decision. He wasn't the last man, it wasn't that bad a foul - and yet the referee has shown the red card. Disgusting."
Chris Waddle, Radio Five Live
49 mins: SENDING OFF
Everton's Tim Cahill is cautioned. Marco Materazzi is then sent off for a tackle on Marco Bresciano. The ref has had a bit of a shocker, as Materazzi didn't seem to be the last defender.
48 mins: Vincenzo Iaquinta gallops down the right flank and puts in a probing cross. Simone Perrotta's shot is blocked and Luca Toni blazes the rebound over. Toni, who could have had a hatful by now, is having a bit of a mare.
46 mins: Italy get the second half under way and they will be looking for an early goal to settle the nerves.
1700 BST: The players are out for the second half and Italy have replaced Alberto Gilardino, who was profligate in the first half, with Vincenzo Iaquinta.
1655 BST: Some first-half player ratings - as generated by you: Mark Viduka 8.87, Luke Wilkshire 8.68, Marco Bresciano 8.53, Luca Toni 8.44, Alessandro Del Piero 8.35
"Every time Italy get decent possession they look dangerous and likely to score. A bit more guile in attack and they should pick Australia off here in the second half." Chris Waddle, Radio Five Live
HALF-TIME: Australia started brightly, but as the half wore on, Italy assumed control. Aussie coach Guus Hiddink will have to work out how to fashion chances after the break.
44 mins: Luke Wilkshire gets to the by-line and puts in a deep cross, but Tim Cahill is unable to get a head on it.
"Australia have got good passers and look good on the ball, but, without Harry Kewell, they haven't got anybody who can run with it."
Chris Waddle, Radio Five Live
41 mins: Luca Toni gets clattered by the rugged Craig Moore but it is adjudged a fair challenge.
39 mins: Luca Toni flicks on an Andrea Pirlo free-kick but Alberto Gilardino is unable to get a toe on the loose ball with the goal at his mercy.
37 mins: Italy are in complete control now and playing the ball around nicely. Andrea Pirlo is the main man, pulling the strings in midfield and finding his strikers with some slide-rule passes.
34 mins: Luca Toni wastes a good chance, heading over after a pin-point ball from Andrea Pirlo is nodded on by Simone Perrotta.
32 mins: Italy conjure a sweeping move, Fabio Cannavaro finding Alessandro Del Piero with a fine ball from defence, and Del Piero playing the ball through to Luca Toni, who takes the ball down on his chest and pulls the trigger - but the shot is blocked.
29 mins: Scott Chipperfield has the best chance of the game so far for Australia, pouncing on a loose ball in the Italian box and shooting straight at Gianluigi Buffon from close range.
27 mins:Fabio Grosso is booked for a foul on Mile Sterjovski.
"Pirlo is beginning to dictate things for Italy and the Azzurri are finding it increasingly easy. Australia need to tighten up and start to support Viduka more or they're going to keep leaking chances."
Chris Waddle, Radio Five Live
25 mins: Italy seem to have snuffed out Australia's early threat and have assumed control of the game. But Australia are still very much in it, with even Mark Viduka chasing lost causes up front.
23 mins: Mark Viduka, who is being swarmed all over by the Italian defenders, manages to get a header in, but it is pretty tame and no problem at all for Gianluigi Buffon.
20 mins: Andrea Pirlo plays a searching ball through to Luca Toni and the Italian striker swivels and shoots - but the shot is saved by Mark Schwarzer's foot and Alberto Gilardino cannot put the follow-up header away.
19 mins: Gennaro Gattuso's cross is knocked down by Luca Toni to his striker partner Alberto Gilardino, but the AC Milan man is unable to keep his shot down and the ball is palmed over by Mark Schwarzer.
16 mins: Italy are playing plenty of long balls at the moment. Very un-Italian. Perhaps they've been watching videos of England?
14 mins: Gennaro Gattuso goes on a driving run, but should have played the ball to one of his strikers and is dispossessed.
11 mins: Australia are dominating at the moment, bossing the midfield and passing the ball about well. However, Marco Materazzi plays in Simone Perrotta, who slips it to Alberto Gilardino - but the Italian striker's shot is blocked by Scott Chipperfield.
"Australia look like they've got three at the back, three in midfield and wing-backs. They're going for it - but there's no way Italy won't score today if it stays this open."
Chris Waddle, Five Live Sport
7 mins: Alberto Gilardino ghosts into the Australian box, but is unable to get a shot away.
5 mins: A spiky start by Australia and it's bubbling up quite nicely. The Italians too seem to have committed themselves to a more up-tempo approach, but are being out-hustled in midfield.
"Guus Hiddink likes to pull surprises and today is no different because I can't work out Australia's formation at the moment - it's all over the place."
Chris Waddle, Five Live Sport
3 mins: Luca Toni gets the first decent chance of the match and should have scored from Alessandro Del Piero's fine cross from the left.
2 mins: Australia hold on to the ball for the first two minutes - probably longer than England managed in the whole of last night's match.
1600 BST: Australia get the game under way.
PRE-MATCH BUILD-UP
1557 BST: The anthems are sung and it's almost time for kick-off. Whatever the result, let's hope it's easier on the eye than England's win over Ecuador last night.
1554 BST: The Italians out-number the Aussies in the stands, but the Aussies are making up for their numerical inferiority with some vociferous chanting.
1549 BST: The players are in the tunnel and ready to make their entrance. Australia skipper Mark Viduka looks pretty relaxed, but also pretty intense - if that's at all possible.
1547 BST: The Fritz-Walter-Stadion is a riot of yellow, green and red as the Australia and Italy fans get revved up for kick-off.
1523 BST: Alessandro Del Piero has been given the chance to turn back the clock - he replaces Francesco Totti in the Italy team and will probably line up in a three-man attack.
Marco Materazzi replaces the injured Alessandro Nesta in the centre of defence while Luca Toni comes back into the side in place of Mauro Camoranesi.
1517 BST: Australia winger Harry Kewell is pictured arriving at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern on crutches - and it is soon confirmed that he will miss the match with a groin strain.
Marco Bresciano takes his place, while Luke Wilkshire comes in for the suspended Brett Emerton. Mark Schwarzer replaces Zeljko Kalac, who had a shocker against Croatia in their final group game.
Italy: Gianluigi Buffon, Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Cannavaro, Marco Materazzi, Fabio Grosso, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, Simone Perrotta, Alessandro Del Piero, Luca Toni, Alberto Gilardino.
Australia: Mark Schwarzer, Lucas Neill, Craig Moore, Tim Cahill, Jason Culina, Mark Viduka, Vince Grella, Scott Chipperfield, Luke Wilkshire, Mile Sterjovski, Marco Bresciano.
