Terrible game really. Neither team created anything. Italy limp into the the quarters. Got to feel sorry for the Aussies, but i don't think they would have scored past the Italians if they were still playing tomorrow.

Australia played well and deserved to win and I guess should take heart from it. Poor Australia, wish they were in the quarters.
1751: Football-1st
That's disgusting never a penalty, to go out like that is a disgrace. Fifa's added pressure on these refs are causing havoc. Terrible decision.
1750: Bluevaio
Penalty! I think that was a wrong decision! It's a shame it really is.
1739: Besonders
I reckon Hiddink feels Australia are safe because Italy are just defending. (Aloisi just came on). Hiddink can save his other changes until before extra-time, so he can have a word with the whole team.
1730: Kastansa
Italy are poor in this game. Credit to the Aussies, they close down everyone quickly. Italy can't get any kind of service to the forwards and could be going out.
1724: zimbo-geordie
I have to say this World Cup has been ruined by trigger happy referees encouraged by FIFA. I understand the need to clamp down on bad challenges, but I have to say that most of the red cards in this tournament have been appalling decisions and only serve to ruin matches.

Australia have to be very careful here. They mustn't get excited and commit too many men in attack. Italy are still very dangerous with 10-men especially on the counter. They've often played better with 10 than with 11 in the past.
1711: ShanklysGhost
Now it's really going to get interesting. Do Australia make the most of being up a man or do they take inspiration from last night's Portugal v Holland match and let it get to 10-a-side?
1708: litmustest
Pretty harsh sending off there. but possibly he got it more for the two footed lunge, not really because he was the last man (which he wasn't).
1659: Otokonoko
Not a bad first half, really. Most possession to Australia, though they always seem to be fighting back rather than forging ahead.
1656: austinspur
Solid half from both teams. Italy should be winning, but Australia have had their chances too. Not sure which way this is going to go to be honest.
1641: SUPERSTAR_GIVEN
Italy are looking good, it's only a matter of time before one of those great passes into the box results in a goal.
1624: BLUEBIRD4LIFE12
Italy are looking much more the treat at the minute. Good movement upfront but their midfield isn't quite clicking at the minute.
1615: ShanklysGhost
I'd love to see what would happen if Australia score first, if they would continue to attack or pull back and defend. It's not like we don't know what would happen if the Italians score first.
1608: Nath
Nice start from the Aussies getting a good early spell of possession!
1556: austinspur
This will be a very physical battle, and the way Australia play, Italy won't need to dive as they'll end up in row X anyway. I will go for Italy to win 1-0 or 2-1.
1547: Bluevaio
I hope Australia beat Italy, but can't see it happening. Australia missed two sitters against Brazil, I doubt Italy will let them can that close. Kewell out is another disappointment of Oz. should be a stroll in the park for Italy: 2-0. A very physical game though, I predict!
1543: Kastansa
The Italians have only conceded one own goal. It's going to take a massive effort from the Aussies. I think it'll be 2-0 to Italy.
1536: GoonerTA5 - Super Henry
Not a big fan of the Italians normally (it's a style thing) but because Del Piero is playing I am going have to cheer them all the way. 1531: bushfighter
Italy impressed me in the group games - it wasn't that they played extremely well, but they always looked as if they had an extra gear they could go into. on the strength of that I've tipped them to meet and beat Argentina in the semis. come on the azzuri!
1527: conchoona
I can see Australia pipping us this afternoon - as much as I would like to think we have the quality, do we have enough to overcome?
1523: BLUEBIRD4LIFE12
I can see Aussie giving away a lot of fouls, leading to a lot of free-kicks for Andrea Pirlo, who is very good at them. And Luca Toni has failed to deliver this tournament so maybe a goal is due for him. However Nesta being out is a big blow for Italy but that Materazzi guy seems to be good, but he ain't no Nesta. An Australian upset on the cards? I don't think so. However, a penalty shootout could be in order perhaps.
1521: ozvillain
I don't know about goals, but I think they'll certainly be a few cards. Go the Socceroos, the World Cup is due a major upset and this could be it!
1518: VaFaNapoli
Del Piero instead of Totti could be a good move by Lippi. Del Piero has looked very sharp when he has come on in earlier games. I hope Italy are not drawn into a physical brawl and play like they did against Ghana, do not underestimate Australia. I am nervous about this game.
