THE ACTION AS IT HAPPENED

PLAYER RATER: Angola skipper Fabrice Akwa is your man of the match with a mark of 7.64. After a spell in Qatar he is now a free agent so do not be surprised to see him join eight of his World Cup team-mates plying their trade in Portugal next season. The power of the player rater will add something special to his CV.

FULL-TIME: It may not have been the best performance but Portugal get those all-important three points. Angola leave the field with their heads held high after a hard-working World Cup debut against fancied opponents.

90 + 2 mins: Angola win a free-kick deep in their own territory and route one is the order of the day. Costinha gets his head to the ball to relieve the pressure.

90 + 1 mins: Maniche lines up and fires in a dipping shot from distance. Joao Ricardo parries it over with a firm right hand.

89 mins: Three minutes of injury time are shown on the board. Time is running out for the underdogs to pull off what would be a sensational draw.

88 mins: Angola are pushing forward. Delgado checks on to his right foot on the left flank and while his cross is half cleared it is belted back in the box and Ricardo saves a flick on off the outside of his right boot from Mateus.

86 mins: Pedro Mantorras gets a sniff of a chance running at the retreating Portuguese defence, but a combination of poor control and lack of support means he fails to get a shot in on goal.

83 mins: Simao Sabrosa gets on the end of Luis Figo's free-kick from the right but heads the ball high and over the bar.

82 mins: The last substitution of the night in Cologne and Hugo Viana, once of Newcastle, trots on to replace Tiago, who was once of Chelsea.

80 mins: A dangerous, flowing Portugal move is broken up by a firm challenge by Delgado on Luis Figo after a heavy touch by the Inter Milan veteran.

79 mins: Nuno Valente is booked for a foul on Pedro Mantorras. The stop in play allows Angola to make their third and final change, Miloy replacing Figueiredo.

77 mins: Pauleta breaks and plays in Simao Sabrosa but the winger's control lets him down.

75 mins: Now Portugal's fans make their voice heard, but in stark contrast they jeer in anger at their team's failure to push forward as they instead play the ball across the back.

72 mins: Angolan supporters make their voices heard despite being outnumbered in Cologne's RheinEnergieStadion. Their team's battling performance has given them hope of a dream draw.

71 mins: Portugal make their second change, Maniche coming on for Petit in midifeld.

69 mins: Pedro Mantorras tries to work space on the edge of the area but just as he pulls his right foot back to shoot he slips and the tackle comes in from Meira.

68 mins: Ricardo Carvalho's header falls to Loco just outside the area, but he snatches at the chance and shoots wildly wide. Edson comes on for Ze Kalanga.

67 mins: Against all expectation the average of 2.4 goals-per-game may be coming down after this match - although in such an open, entertaining encounter you sense there must be at least another goal in the game.

66 mins: Miguel's on the attack now but Kali's covering tackle stops the full-back's break into the box as he thumps the ball into the stand.

63 mins: After a quiet spell Angola give the Portuguese something to think about again. Miguel gets a vital touch to deny the barrel-chested Delgado from getting in behind the defensive line on the left.

61 mins: Joao Ricardo makes another save, this time denying Tiago who shoots from the edge of the area to round off a sweeping move.

59 mins: Akwa, who has worked his socks off in attack, is replaced by Pedro Mantorras and Figueiredo takes on the captaincy. Portugal also make a change and it has a hint of the defensive about it with Costinha replacing Cristiano Ronaldo.

58 mins: The match resembles a typewriter at the moment - always pinging back from right to left. This time Pauleta has time to pick his spot but Joao Ricardo dives low to his left to save.

57 mins: Simao Sabrosa drills in a low shot from the second of two, quick Portugal corners but it rebounds clear.

55 mins: Angola have lost the zip that they found late in the first half. They are sitting deep and Portugal are pushing for a second.

53 mins: Luis Figo's got 11 years on Ze Kalanga but he doesn't let it show. The 33-year-old races back to harry the 22-year-old into a mistake after gifting him the ball.

52 mins: Kali's outstretched leg steals the ball from Tiago on the edge of the area - a crucial tackle with the Angolan defence back-pedalling.

51 mins: Andre clatters into Luis Figo from behind and earns a yellow card.

49 mins: Simao Sabrosa starts the second 45 on the left and the throw he initially wins soon becomes a free-kick in a dangerous position. Cristiano Ronaldo goes for goal but Jamba gets a crucial head to it.

46 mins: Tiago is caught in two minds just outside the area. Is it a shot or a chip? Neither. Joao Ricardo easily gathers a tame, looping shot.

2104 BST: Angola start the second half and will hope they do not get caught cold as they did at the start of the first half.

PLAYER RATER: The performance of the minnows has clearly caught your eye. Portugal dominated the early ratings but Angola now have the edge and Akwa's the star man with a mark of 7.65.

Angola were stung early but they are coming into it. They've had two shots on goal and there's a threat for Portugal. It has been a good half.
Jimmy Armfield, Five Live Sport

HALF-TIME: After five minutes it looked like Angola would be in for a drubbing but they have grown into the match and there is the promise of an intriguing second half.

45 mins: Mateus accelerates down the right but just as he's looking to make a telling pass he over-runs the ball and the move breaks down.

44 mins: Now it is Joao Ricardo's turn to make a fine save. Miguel squares the ball for Ronaldo but his fizzing shot is parried by the man who has not played club football for 11 months as he is unattached. Any prospective employers out there would be impressed.

42 mins: Patient play by Angola ends with Andre firing in a low drive from distance which Ricardo palms away. The keeper flaps at the subsequent corner but wins a free-kick.

39 mins: Good play by Portugal, switching from right to left and back again, ends with an inviting cross by Miguel. Jamba gets to it before Pauleta to head clear.

37 mins: The game is so open it is amazing there have not been more goals.

35 mins: Figueirdo crosses into the box but the ball skips off the turf and forces Mateus wider than he would like on the left. He's unable to get it back into the danger area.

34 mins: Another pacy Cristiano Ronaldo break ends in a corner.Luis Figo steps and Ronaldo's powerful free header cannons back off the bar.

32 mins: Luis Figo clips in a cross from the left on the break. It just evades the head of Pauleta at the near post and bounces up off the thighs of a surprised Ronaldo at the back post.

29 mins: A Luis Figo free-kick from the opposite flank is cleared by the first defender.

28 mins: Fouler is fouled. Cristiano Ronaldo is up-ended on the left by Jamba who earns the second booking of the game for his troubles. Ronaldo attempts an ambitious free-kick from the resultant free-kick which curls harmlessly over.

26 mins: Angola are growing into the game and Cristiano Ronaldo earns the first yellow card of the game. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has already stated he is worried by the winger's temperament.

24 mins: Akwa's first bicycle kick was clearly a sighter. This time he makes contact with a cross from the right but cannot direct it on target. Maybe it will be a case of third time lucky.

24 mins: Angola's best spell of play, with some neat passing across midfield, ends with Mateus firing a long-range effort wide.

22 mins: Lazy play from Andre in the centre of the park gifts the ball to Portugal. A brisk move ends with Simao Sabrosa curling his side's fifth shot on goal over the bar.

19 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo races at the Angolan defence and in the tackle the ball breaks for Simao Sabrosa who wins a free-kick by the corner flag. Luis Figo's deadball delivery rifles across the area and away to safety from an Angolan perspective.

16 mins: In attack Portugal are playing a very fluid system with Ronaldo and Figo popping up all over the place. Angola are doing there all to hold their opponents at bay but have still not had much time on the ball.

14 mins: Pauleta gets on the end of a long clearance but hooks a shot just wide with the keeper Joao Ricardo in close attendance having raced off his line.

11 mins: Akwa gets a sight of goal - or maybe not. He instead probably sees the top tier of the RheinEnergieStadion in attempting to execute an athletic bicycle kick. No contact and no work for Ricardo.

10 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo and Miguel combine to break at pace down the right but the Manchester United flyer opts to showboat with the cross when a regualtion cross would have proved more dangerous.

8 mins: Angola get a corner but Portugal keeper Ricardo grabs the ball of Akwa's head.

7 mins: Now it is Ronaldo's turn to race at the Angolan defence down the left, but he steps on the ball on the edge of the area at the vital moment.

5 mins: GOAL Angola 0-1 Portugal
Scare number two ends in a goal for Pauleta. Luis Figo races past Jamba down the left channel and squares for his team-mate to slot his 47th international goal.

3 mins: Angola look to put that early scare behind them, but although they are playing further up the field they are struggling to get much possession.

2000 BST: Portugal get the ball rolling and carve Angola open with ease. Simao releases Pauleta down the left and he narrowly fails to score after just 12 seconds, dragging a shot inches wide of the post.

PRE-MATCH BUILD-UP

1956 BST: The teams line up for the two anthems. Former colony and ruler side by side. Angola gained independence in 1975. Five of the Portuguese starting XI were born before Angola played their first international - a 1-0 win over Cuba in June 1977.

1952 BST: The 1989 meeting between the countries ended in Angola's heaviest defeat - 6-0 in Lisbon. The second meeting in 2001 was abandoned with the score at 5-1 after Angola had gone down to six men.

1948 BST:I can't see Portugal failing. Ronaldo got the biggest cheer on the big screen from the Portuguese supporters as if they're saying he's the man who's going to do it for them.
Jimmy Armfield, Five Live Sport

1944 BST: Despite Deco's absence with a foot injury, Portugal will be confident of finishing the day level on points with Mexico at the top of Group D. They are the only European team to have played their former colony and have totted up 11 goals in two outings. The tournament average of 2.4 goals-per-game could be on the rise.

1936 BST: Angola coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves - AKA The Professor - is not afraid of making tough decisions. Striker Pedro Mantorras declared "I won't accept this lack of respect" when he was left on the bench at the African Cup of Nations earlier in the year. Five months on that is exactly where he finds himself starting the World Cup.
