Peterborough United exit like divorce - Gary Johnson

Johnson let Posh after nine months in charge

Gary Johnson says his departure as Peterborough United boss was like coming to the end of a failed marriage.

A Posh statement on Monday stated Johnson and chairman Darragh MacAnthony "could not see eye to eye on policy".

And Johnson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "There's nothing more other than individual circumstances that you need to add to that.

"Not seeing eye to eye is like a marriage that ends in divorce and that's what happened here."

The 55-year-old former Bristol City manager has signed a confidentiality agreement with the League One club, meaning he cannot explain the details behind his departure.

But Johnson revealed the suggestion of an amicable split was suggested to him by director of football Barry Fry on behalf of MacAnthony.

"Barry Fry spoke to me on Monday," he explained.

"And the chairman called me for the first time on Tuesday and said sorry it didn't work out, good luck and maybe our paths will cross in the future.

"I never leave anywhere saying bad things about anybody and I haven't, I wish them all well because they were my employees and I did my best for them.

"But for whatever reason the decision was made between the two parties eventually."

The ex-Cambridge United boss left London Road with Posh seventh in the table, but level on points with sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday.

And he is confident he could have finished the season among the play-off places had he stayed at the club.

"We'd have definitely been in the top six, I know it's easy to say that now," he said.

"Of course the chairman's ambitions were a little bit higher than that but it was a big thing to pick the morale up from a relegation season."
