England got the result they deserved against Turkey after a much improved second-half performance at the Stadium of Light.
For the first 35 minutes the game was tense, tight and pretty even, with England very wary of the Turks hitting them on the break.
But then Wayne Rooney showed what he is all about with his touch, his strength and his technique and he gave England a real boost going into half-time.
The first goal was crucial as it came when England were right on top |
Rooney will get the headlines after his display and quite rightly so, but it was very much a team performance.
At half-time I thought if England played well they could go on and win the game and they played exceptionally well.
I thought all the players produced.
Sol Campbell was like a giant at the back and Steven Gerrard made a real impact down the left-hand side.
Darius Vassell was also excellent when he came off the bench after the break. He made a good impression even before he scored, cutting inside and forcing a great save from Rustu.
The first goal was so crucial because it came at a time when England were right on top.
Rustu made a great save from Rio Ferdinand's shot and Vassell was on hand, there in the box where a centre-forward should be. You have to take a chance and get in there.
England dominated the game as far as chances are concerned against a very good side |
I don't think the penalty should have been given, you could see that Kieron Dyer was on his way down before he was touched.
But then again, earlier in the game England had a legitimate appeal for a penalty kick turned down by the referee, so justice was probably done.
However, let's not forget David James' save at 1-0. It was a magnificent save, especially at such a critical time.
When he does things instinctively James is at his best, it's when he's got to display some sort of judgement that you start to panic.
England dominated the game as far as chances are concerned against what I would consider to be a very good side.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's men deserved to take the three points, there is no doubt about that.
