Wenger eyes Euro glory
Arsenal's Thierry Henry celebrates
Thierry Henry celebrates his opening goal
Arsenal's blistering start to the Premiership season has convinced manager Arsene Wenger that they can win the Champions League.

Wenger believes that his side can emerge victorious in Europe for the first time in their history this season.

Although they landed the domestic double last season, the Gunners have failed to get past the quarter-finals of the Champions League since Wenger came to the club.

But the Frenchman now sees reasons for considerable optimism as they prepare for their opening game on Tuesday against Borussia Dortmund.

You feel stronger when you're doing well in your own league
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger

"There is a very big desire in this team to do well in Europe and it is in me as well," he admitted.

"We will give everything to win it, but it's the best teams in Europe. But I am positive and I think we will do it.

"Do you think I go into any competition thinking I cannot win it? No chance.

"We know it's difficult but we have the belief and the quality. The rest is down to performances."

Wenger is eager for European success after losing a Cup Winners' Cup final and a Uefa Cup final.

But he is encouraged by his side's unbeaten start to the season which has seen them take an early lead at the top of the table.

"You feel stronger when you're doing well in your own league," he said.

"We have gathered experience and we have established ourselves in the top eight seeded teams. Now we want to be at the top of that list."

Arsenal inflicted Charlton's fourth Premiership defeat this season and third at the Valley.

But Addicks boss Alan Curbishley had little to complain about this time around as he was left in awe of the Gunners.

"Arsenal have so much quality," he said.

"If they don't win the league and do well in the Champions League, it would be a disaster for them as they're such a good side.

"[Patrick] Vieira has got the lot. If he pushed himself, he could probably get 10 to 12 goals a season.

"As it is, he does the destroying role so well and also links their play, plus he's 6ft 3ins, which also helps."
