League Two looks like being an open competition once again, with a host of teams in the running for the title.
Barnet and Carlisle will be hoping to shine on their respective returns to the Football League while the likes of Torquay - relegated last season on goal difference - will aim to bounce straight back.
BBC Sport highlights six young players who could shape the way the season unfolds.
NICKY BAILEY (Barnet)
Bailey has represented England's non-league international team |
The 21-year-old was Barnet boss Paul Fairclough's first signing after taking over at Underhill in May 2004.
Fairclough knew the midfielder from his time as an England non-league international.
Bailey quickly established himself as an essential member of Barnet's Conference-winning side last season, netting seven goals in his 39 appearances.
The ex-Sutton man distinguished himself with the Conference goal of the season in a televised encounter against Dagenham in October 2004, and will be relishing the chance to shine in the Football League.
DANNY CROW (Peterborough)
Peterborough snapped up Crow from Norwich City |
The 19-year-old striker was snapped up after being released by Norwich and looks to be a shrewd signing by Posh boss Mark Wright.
Crow has so far seen first-team opportunities limited in his short career, although he netted twice in four starts during a spell on loan with Northampton last season.
Wright has already spoken of his admiration for Crow's strength and intuition on the field, and the striker's impressive scoring record as a youth.
Crow was Norwich's academy player of the year in 2003-04, and will hope to make good on his potential with Posh.
MICHAEL RAYNES (Stockport)
Raynes made his Stockport debut in the FA Cup defeat at Swansea last season, just two months after his 17th birthday.
The young defender became a regular throughout the second half of Stockport's troubled season, which ended with their relegation from League One.
Raynes will be hoping for better fortunes as County boss Chris Turner aims to bounce back at the first attempt.
Premiership West Brom have already professed an interest in the youngster, and County have made it clear they are not prepared to let him go cheaply.
NATHAN TYSON (Wycombe)
Tyson has played international football for England Under-20s |
Tyson, 23, has already established himself as one of the brightest strikers in League Two.
The pacy front man bagged 22 league goals last season to finish joint-third in the division's scoring charts.
That included hat-tricks against Lincoln and Kidderminster late in the season, and his form has attracted interest from other clubs.
Wanderers have already rejected a 100,000 bid from Luton as "derisory" and will hope Tyson's stock rises further with another hatful of goals this season.
JAMIE YOUNG (Rushden & Diamonds)
Young played in the international Under-20s tournament in Toulon |
Brought to Nene Park on a season-long loan from Reading, Young is already a very promising goalkeeper at the tender age of 19.
Capped by the England Under-20s during the summer's tournament in Toulon, Young will be hoping to gain vital first-team experience this season.
He made his one and only first-team appearance for Reading as a replacement for Marcus Hahnemann against Stoke City in March 2004.
But with ex-Hinckley keeper Farhad Afandjyev the only other stopper on Rushden's books, he may well get the chance for more experience.
GABRIEL ZAKUANI (Leyton Orient)
Zakuani marked himself out as a special talent when he made his debut as a substitute against Bournemouth in 2003 aged just 16.
Now, having turned 19 in May, the Zaire-born defender has become a regular feature in the Orient first team.
Despite his youth, Zakuani is strong and agile and not one to be bullied by opposing centre-forwards.
He has clocked up more than 40 league appearances for the O's, and will be looking to help Martin Ling's side improve on last season's 11th place.
