Craig Bellamy's injury-time winner sent Newcastle United into the Champions League second phase on a night of nerve-jangling drama against Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

Newcastle sent boss Bobby Robson on a roller-coaster ride of emotions as they raced into a two-goal lead before allowing Feyenoord back in to set up a dramatic finale.

Bellamy and Hugo Viana looked to have landed Newcastle the �10m cash jackpot that comes with progress in the Champions League.

But goals from Mariano Bombardo and Anthony Lurling left Newcastle contemplating the prospect of leaving the De Kuip Stadium empty-handed.

Then came Bellamy's dramatic intervention which - coupled with Juventus' win against Dynamo Kiev - capped a remarkable recovery in the group stage for Newcastle after losing their first three games.

Newcastle knew only victory would do - and set about their task with relish.

Bellamy should have put Newcastle ahead after 36 minutes when he raced clear, but a moment of hesitation allowed Patrick Lodewijks to save.

But it was no contest when the pair met face to face again in first-half injury time.

It was classic Newcastle, Alan Shearer flicking on Shay Given's kick for Bellamy to race in and score.

Newcastle were refusing to allow events in Kiev to enter their thoughts and pushed on for a second - which came three minutes after the break.

Kieron Dyer did brilliantly to harass the Feyenoord defence, and Viana provided the finish his hard work deserved with a left foot drive from the edge of the box.

Newcastle were rampant and almost added a third instantly, Bellamy forcing a fine save from Lodewijks, although the awful German referee Franz-Xaver Wack gave a goal kick.

And the goalkeeper was in action again after 58 minutes as he finger-tipped a fierce Shearer free-kick over the bar.

But Feyenoord grasped at a lifeline six minutes later when Bombarda scrambled home from Bonaventure Kalou's pass.

Bellamy was denied by Lodewijks once more before Feyenoord restored equality with 20 minutes to go.

Newcastle, as they had started to do, conceded possession and were punished by Lurling's powerful finish.

The atmosphere inside the giant stadium was at fever pitch, and Feyenoord almost capped a dramatic comeback as Lurling was narrowly off target with Given beaten.

And as Newcastle floundered, Paul Bosvelt was inches away with only four minutes left.

But as Robson's side looked like having to settle for a place in the Uefa Cup, Bellamy slid home the winner after Lodewijks saved brilliantly from Dyer.
