| Ferguson praises Forlan ![]() Forlan finally strikes from the penalty spot E-mail your reaction to Football Talk Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson paid a glowing tribute to Diego Forlan after he ended his goal drought in the 5-2 Champions League win against Maccabi Haifa. David Beckham stepped aside to let Uruguayan striker Forlan take a late penalty and score for the first time in 27 games. Beckham confessed he would have been "hated by 67,000 people" inside Old Trafford if he had ignored Forlan's plea to take the spot-kick. The goal delighted Ferguson - who also praised strike pair Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer were both on target at Old Trafford, but the biggest cheers were reserved for Forlan. Ferguson said: "Diego's movement is first-class and he deserves his goal. "Even in the half hour he was on, he created half a dozen chances. "If you put that amount of effort in you should get something. Hopefully he will settle down now and get lots more. "I am pleased for him, albeit a penalty but that will kick-start him I'm sure of that, he did some fantastic work."
"Solskjaer's goal tells you what a great goalscorer he is. It will be a kickstart for him and give him the confidence to go on with it. "Ruud took his goal well and the great thing is that he made a great goal for Ole and that is an important part, if you don't score you contribute." Beckham was also pleased for Forlan, saying: "It was important for Diego to score, it's been so long. "He works hard for the team he's had chances in the game where he could have scored but he's seen a better chance and given it to someone. "This shows what type of player he is, but it's great that he's got his first goal." Forlan admitted: "I am happy to score my first goal and I am also happy because we won. "It's an important match to begin the Champions League. We had to win at home, so we did. "I am trying to do the best for the team. It's a great team with great players" |
