| Kiev maul Magpies ![]() Robson's side have yet to get going this season Dynamo Kiev 2-0 Newcastle Dynamo Kiev rolled over Newcastle in an absorbing Champions League Group E game thanks to goals from Maksim Shatskikh and Aliaksandr Khatskevich. Newcastle adopted an aggressive approach throughout, but Bobby Robson's side paid the price for their inability to create any clear-cut chances. Kiev played on the counterattack, but in the final third, their football displayed a cutting edge that Robson's side were simply unable to replicate. That was no better illustrated than on 17 minutes when Shatskikh, whose deadliness was a start contrast to that of the muzzled strike duo of Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy, gave Kiev the lead. When Shatskikh picked up the ball from Jerko Leko's pass just outside the box there seemed absolutely no danger.
But in the blink of an eye the Kiev striker arrowed a fierce shot into Given's top right-hand corner leaving the Newcastle goalkeeper clutching air. Despite that setback Robson's side, driven forward by the hugely impressive Hugo Viana, did not suffer first night nerves on their return to the Champions League stage. After the restart the Portuguese midfielder briefly threatened to haul Newcastle back into the match as he peppered Vitaliy Reva's goal with a series of shots. Just past the hour Newcastle's hopes were all but extinguished by another piece of opportunistic Kiev finishing. Olexander Melashchenko surged down the right and lashed the ball into the centre, a cross that Given was unable to hold, allowing Khatskevich to nod the ball home.
All through the night Kiev had caused Newcastle plenty of problems down that flank, with Georgi Peev and Leandro linking well. In midfield Florin Cernat was also hugely influential and his shooting shot provided Given with plenty to think about. It was Cernat and Leandro who combined well to feed Leko at the far post, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Early on Newcastle had looked bright, dominating possession and pinning back Kiev in their own half. And even after Shatskikh had put the Ukrainians ahead, Newcastle responded with plenty of vim. Notably when Bellamy almost grabbed an equaliser when Tiberiu Ghioae's chested back pass to Reva lacked sufficient power. But the Kiev goalkeeper just got to the ball ahead of the Welsh international striker. Just before half-time Newcastle did manage to pierce the Kiev defence as Dyer surged forward, but rather than shooting, he opted to pass to Bellamy and the chance passed.
