Winter is regarded as the UK's most successful surfer

Newquay's Russell Winter eased through his first round heat at the Boardmasters Surf Competition.

Winter picked up the highest heat score of the day - 15.33 - as he made light work of his passage into round two.

Sam Lamiroy was the second British surfer to pass through the heats at Fistral Beach.

Other notable qualifiers were the 2009 European Junior Champion Marc Lacomare, and world number 30 Travis Logie, who both cruised through their heats.
