Australia wary of India fightback
Gilchrist will continue as stand-in skipper for the second Test

Stand-in Australia captain Adam Gilchrist has warned that India could still bounce back despite a resounding 217-run first Test defeat.

The tourists were made to work for the victory after a recovery saw India score 153 for their last four wickets.

"It was a convincing win, but that does not mean one team is better than the other," said Gilchrist.

"There were some areas we have to work on and we know India are capable of bouncing back."

Australia took a 1-0 lead on their last Test tour of India in 2001 but the hosts came from behind to clinch the series 2-1 in classic fashion.

If Warney gets eight wickets in this series and that's all Laxman, as captain I'll take that

The second match of the four-Test series begins in Madras, now known as Chennai, on Thursday.

And Gilchrist will lead the side again as skipper Ricky Ponting continues to recover from a broken thumb.

"We certainly didn't know what it was to lose a test match three years ago at this stage," Gilchrist admitted.

"I'm aware of that now. It's pretty much what the whole team is thinking.

"We have been in this position before but I think we've got a little bit of different confidence in our team as opposed to three years ago."

Wicket-keeper Gilchrist reserved some praise for Shane Warne, despite a difficult final day for the leg-spinner, who returned match figures of 4-193.

Warne, still one shy of equalling Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's Test record of 532 wickets, at least dismissed VVS Laxman cheaply in both innings.

Laxman was Australia's chief tormentor during the 2001 tour and also scoring heavily in a 1-1 draw in Australia last December.

"Warne got the most dangerous man we have come across in world cricket," Gilchrist said.

"If Warney gets eight wickets in this series and that's all Laxman, as captain I'll take that."
