First Test, Perth, day two (stumps)
Australia 381 & 15-0 v Pakistan 179
The veteran Kasprowicz again proved his value to Australia |
Michael Kasprowicz took 5-30 as Pakistan were dismissed for 179 in reply to Australia's 381 in Perth.
Younis Khan hit 42, but the tourists slumped to 111-8 before Mohammad Sami and Shoaib Akhtar briefly raised hopes of a recovery with a partnership of 60.
But they were finally dismissed and the hosts then reached 15-0 in their second innings from three overs of batting.
Australia had closed their first innings on 381 all out, with Justin Langer last man dismissed for 191.
Australia had begun the second day on 357-8, and some lusty blows from Langer and the tail advanced the score by a further 24 runs.
Shoaib finished with 5-99 from 22 overs of toil in the Waca heat.
Pakistani openers Salman Butt and Imran Farhat put on 32 in partnership before four wickets fell for just 28.
Jason Gillespie started the rout, persuading Farhat to edge behind, before Salman was also caught by Adam Gilchrist as the wicket-keeper clung to a leg-side edge off Kasprowicz.
Swing and a miss: Abdul Razzaq is bowled by Shane Warne |
The same bowler then bowled an uncertain Inzamam-ul-Haq through the gate for just one before Yousuf Youhana also fell to Kasprowicz for a single, giving Gilchrist his third catch.
Younis and Abdul Razzaq put on 48 for the fifth wicket before Shane Warne (3-38) embarked on a profitable spell.
Younis mowed the leg-spinner to mid-on, before Razzaq and was bowled two overs later.
Two more wickets fell quickly before the tourists were finally given a lift by Shoaib and Sami.
As the Aussies strived for their next breakthrough, Ricky Ponting's rarely-used seam bowling was employed but he was hooked for six by a fired-up Shoaib.
Finally, Glenn McGrath had Shoaib (27) caught at first slip before Sami (29) was well held by Michael Clarke at backward point to give Kasprowicz his fifth wicket.
Australia then had the opportunity to enforce the follow-on but instead chose to bat, Langer and Matthew Hayden safely negotiating swing-friendly conditions in the early evening.
