Shoaib's arm was put in a sling by the team physio |
Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was taken to hospital for a scan on his left shoulder during the first Test against Australia in Perth. Shoaib suffered the injury when he dived in the field soon after lunch on the third day of the match.
"There is extensive bruising around the shoulder," said a Western Australia Cricket Association spokesman.
"But there is no tearing or structural damage, although a surgeon will have to confirm that."
Shoaib is not expected to play any further part in the match, but Pakistan are hopeful he will be available for the two remaining Tests and one-day series which follows.
The incident happened less than 24 hours after he was fined an estimated 2,900 for breaching the players' code of conduct.
He was docked 40% of his match fee by ICC refereee Ranjan Madugalle for pointing Matthew Hayden back to the pavilion after dismissing him.
He was charged by umpires Billy Bowden, Rudi Koertzen and third official Steve David for breaching section 1.6 of the ICC code.
The section reads: "Pointing or gesturing towards the pavilion in an aggressive manner by a bowler or other member of the fielding side upon the dismissal of a batsman."
Pakistan are facing the prospect of defeat after ending day two on 18-1, having been set a victory target of 564.
