Third one-day international, Brisbane
Australia v New Zealand
Match abandoned, rain Rain was the winner at the Gabba |
Rain forced the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy one-day cricket series decider between Australia and New Zealand to be cancelled at the Gabba.
Not a ball was bowled as rain and a wet outfield prevented play, with a big crowd left disappointed and the inaugural series finishing tied at 1-1.
New Zealand had taken the series opener by four wickets in a thrilling contest that went to the wire in Melbourne.
Australia hit back with an exciting 17-run win in Sydney on Wednesday.
Play was due to start at 0315 GMT but the toss was delayed as ground staff kept the wicket covered.
Rain continued to fall for another four hours before the game was called off.
Australian captain Ricky Ponting said: "It was certainly shaping up to be a great day today so obviously it was a very disappointing end as far as the players are concerned.
"I think everyone was looking forward to today after what happened down in Sydney."
New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming said his side would continue to develop in time for the rematch early next year.
He said: "The two games had been excellent one-day games and I don't think this one would have been any different.
"I think our one-day cricket's in good shape and there are a couple of guys simmering in the background that could just add a dimension to take us to that next step."
