England's Andrew Flintoff starred with bat and ball in a thrilling five-run victory in Bombay to tie the one-day series with India.

The Lancashire all-rounder marshalled England's tail to reach 255, making 40 from 50 deliveries, and took three wickets as India were bowled out for 250 in reply.

And in a tense final over, Flintoff was responsible for the run-out of Anil Kumble and the wicket of Javagal Srinath, clean bowled, as the hosts buckled under pressure.

Both teams started their innings with a single batsman scoring speedily - England opener Marcus Trescothick made 95 and Indian captain Sourav Ganguly 80 at three in the order.

But in both cases, their dismissals led to batting collapses, and Flintoff proved the difference between the two sides.

Having made 88 from 99 deliveries, including four sixes, Ganguly was out in bizarre fashion, an edged sweep off Ashley Giles rolling onto his stumps.

That left India 191 for four in the 37th over, and the next three wickets fell for 33 runs as a young middle order self-destructed.

Flintoff had youngster Mohammed Kaif flashing suicidally outside off-stump to hand Nasser Hussain a high leading edge at cover.

And first-innings hero Harbhajan Singh lobbed to Paul Collingwood at backward point.

Andrew Caddick and Darren Gough returned after expensive opening spells to keep the pressure on at the death.

After an aggressive second-wicket stand of 52 off 59 balls between Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, England managed to stem the flow of runs.

Flintoff bowled with pace and accuracy to allow just 18 runs from his first six overs.

And Michael Vaughan's part-time off-spin proved economical against the left-handed pairing of Ganguly and Dinesh Mongia.

That frustration resulted in Mongia's dismissal, stumped by wicketkeeper James Foster for 35.

Revenge

Vaughan added the wicket of Ajay Ratra to finish with figures of two for 37 off his ten overs.

The Bombay crowd was silenced when hometown hero Tendulkar was out for 12, caught off the edge by a delivery from Gough which found extra bounce.

And Caddick gained revenge for an opening seven-over spell which saw 51 runs scored when he had Sehwag caught, clipping to midwicket for 31.

Harbhajan's career-best five for 43, including four scalps in two overs, was key to England's mid-innings flop from 171 for three to 174 for seven.

But Flintoff added 81 runs with Foster, Caddick and Gough, including a Bombay record 37 for the 10th wicket with Gough, who finished 16 not out.

Thorpe was Harbhajan's first victim, stumped by wicketkeeper Ratra, going down the track to a wide delivery.

Trescothick gave a return catch to Harbhajan for the second wicket of the 28th over.

And two more followed in the 30th, both caught by Sehwag, Collingwood chipping to midwicket and Giles taken at second slip.

Flintoff and Foster consolidated through eight overs for 30 runs before the wicketkeeper gave Harbhajan his second return catch, courtesy of a top-spinner.

Having been dropped at point off the first ball of the match, Trescothick's 95 took just 80 deliveries, with nine fours and a six.

And it was enough to gain the left-hander the man-of-the-match award from referee Denis Lindsay.

He and Nasser Hussain came together in a second wicket stand of 87 in 11 overs after Nick Knight had fallen in the first over.

Knight survived an appeal for an edge behind off his first ball but fell next delivery to Srinath in the very same manner.

Having made an aggressive 41, Hussain was out to Ganguly's second delivery, a trademark hook to a long hop taken by Harbhajan at deep backward square.
