The Durham all-rounder said: "There was a lot of commitment and desire. I can't fault their effort out there.

"But the way we fought back was a great effort and a credit to all the boys. They can keep their heads held high.

"It is tough to take when you are on the wrong end of a result but we can take a lot of positives out of that."

The seven-match series now goes to a decider at Lord's on Saturday after India's dramatic two-wicket win.

Owais Shah hit an unbeaten 107 and shared a century stand with debutant Luke Wright (50) to help England recover from 137-5 to 316-6 in their 50 overs.

In reply, India openers Saurav Ganguly (53) and Sachin Tendulkar put on 150 for the first wicket, though the regular fall of wickets from that point on gave England hope until Robin Uthappa steered the tourists home.

Collingwood added: "We are very disappointed. We were put under a lot of pressure there, and the way we fought back in the first innings - a young guy like Luke Wright to come in with a swashbuckling 50 to change the momentum - made it a great effort to get up to more than 300."

Dimitri Mascarenhas also helped boost England's total by hitting five consecutive sixes off the the final five balls of their innings, bowled by Yuvraj Singh.

The Hampshire all-rounder, who had never hit more than three sixes in an over before, said: "It's what I have been doing for Hampshire for the last four or five years more consistently.

"After the second one I thought 'I am seeing it pretty well here, I am just swinging hard'.

"They just hit the middle of the bat - and Yuvraj probably bowled them in the right areas for me. If you ask him, I guess he'd think he just got it a little bit wrong."

Collingwood said: "It was a top effort by Dimi - great striking of the ball.

"The only thing I can remember close to that was South Africa against Australia when both sides scored 400.

"That was like constant highlights - and it's the only thing that comes close to today."
