England miss 'golden opportunity'
Captains Marcus Trescothick and Inzamam-ul-Haq
England head to Faisalabad on Thursday ahead of the second Test having missed a "golden opportunity" to go 1-0 up against Pakistan, says David Graveney.

"I'm sure that when the lads wake up in the morning they will be kicking themselves," England's chief selector told BBC Five Live.

"Some will be criticising the shots of Freddie (Flintoff) and Kevin Pietersen.

"But that's exactly the way they played in the summer and they got a good result against Australia."

England collapsed to 175 all out on Wednesday's final day, chasing 198 to win on a good pitch in Multan.

Stand-in captain Marcus Trescothick said his fine batting form meant little after England's defeat.

"I was delighted with the way it went for me personally but at the end of the day it's totally irrelevant.

"The main result is the win or loss," said the opener, who hit a first innings 193.

"We didn't get enough runs. A bit more application building up for the next game is going to be crucial."

If we had been a bit more patient and realised we could stick around and grind it out a bit it could have been a different result
Duncan Fletcher

However, Trescothick said the side would not make any major changes for the next Test, beginning in Faisalabad on Sunday.

"The bowlers have worked particularly hard, the batters need to keep adapting to the pitches and make sure we come back strong," he added.

"You have to go through ups and downs throughout big series and big games.

"We'll do exactly the same preparation we have done; we'll come back strong and make sure we win the next one."

Coach Duncan Fletcher compared the defeat to England's last loss, in the opening Ashes match at Lord's, which they dominated before collapsing.

"It happened against Australia and we came back strongly," said Fletcher.

"It was the same thing here - we played good cricket for four days and were unfortunate in one period.

"If we had been a bit more patient and realised we could stick around and grind it out a bit it could have been a different result."
