Flintoff confident of England win
Andrew Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff has backed England to "get across the line" on the final day of the opening Test against Pakistan.

They need another 174 for victory with nine wickets in hand after reaching the close on 24-1.

"The wicket is still good. It'll probably turn a little bit more, maybe keep a bit low but we're confident of chasing these runs down.

"We've got some fine batters in our ranks so it's not a bad position to be in," Flintoff told BBC Sport.

"We've got to chase 170 and we can't just graft it - we've still got to play the way we play. We're a positive side and score runs in a positive manner. I don't think that will change."

Pakistan were in a good position at 266-3 in their second innings but England's bowlers stuck to their task with discipline and determination.

Once home skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq had been dismissed for 72, they worked their way through the rest and Pakistan were all out for 341.

"It's been a tough day for us. We knew when we came out here that we'd have to work hard for wickets.

"I managed to whittle a couple out. Hoggy was fantastic again, chipping in with a couple, and Harmy finished it off at the end.

"We bowled well as a unit which we have been doing for a period of time," said Flintoff.

"After the initial burst with the new ball, out here you've got to sit back a little bit and try to apply pressure by drying up the runs. It's something we've discussed and we're aware of.

"This side has got a lot of character. When we need someone to put a performance in, over a period of time now someone has put their hand up and done it. Today was no different."

Flintoff's only major concern was the 17 no-balls he sent down in the match.

"I'm going to have to cut them out. I don't want to be bowling extra balls here, it's hard enough anyway," he added.
