Trescothick inspires England
Second Test, Edgbaston, day one (stumps):
England 313-5 v West Indies

Marcus Trescothick scored his first Test century against West Indies although the visitors hit back with five wickets in the second Test.

England have the upper hand after getting off to a flyer and at stumps at Edgbaston were 313-5.

Graham Thorpe notched up his 26th Test fifty before being dismissed for 61 and England will resume with Andrew Flintoff on 42 and Geraint Jones on 27.

Dwayne Bravo was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, taking 2-42.

West Indies have a great record at Edgbaston, winning three of their last four Tests against England by an innings.

But it was England, who have only beaten West Indies once in Birmingham, who started briskly, smashing 70 runs in the first hour.

However a bowling change by Brian Lara stemmed the flow.

He brought on Jermaine Lawson, who replaced Fidel Edwards from the Lord's Test, and Bravo and they caused the batsmen a number of problems before Andrew Strauss gave his wicket away.

Strauss was out for 24, attempting to drive a wide delivery but instead edging it to wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs.

By lunch they had reached 105-1 but soon after the interval the tourists hit back with two quick wickets.

First Robert Key, a double centurion at Lord's, was out for 29 when he played a loose shot off Pedro Collins' bowling and was caught by Lara in the slips.

Then England captain Michael Vaughan put in a cameo appearance, hitting two imperious boundaries before a slower ball by Bravo hoodwinked him and he was caught and bowled for 12.

Trescothick and Graham Thorpe plodded on for England with the Somerset batsman recording the seventh Test ton of his career.

But he was finally out for 105 when a clever field placing by Lara saw him tempted into nibbling at a Bravo delivery and edging it to the West Indies captain, who was standing a bit wider in the slips.

Thorpe and Flintoff then took up the cause with Thorpe registering a Test fifty and looking in good touch.

And he was unlucky when he bottom-edged a Corey Collymore delivery which cannoned into his hip and was caught behind by Jacobs.

Flintoff was playing an unusually patient innings by his standards but could not shackle his shots when handed a shorter ball, smashing spinner Omari Banks for the only six of the day.

And Geraint Jones was not hanging about either, although some poor deliveries handed the Kent wicket-keeper easy fours to put away.

However just as they were getting into a groove, bad light was offered and the England batsmen walked off 4.4 overs early.
