Fourth Test, Antigua (day four, stumps)
West Indies 751-5 dec. v England 285 & 145-0 | I went out there and got my head down |
Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan finally played their first meaningful innings of the series as England battled for a draw in Antigua.
They were perhaps inspired by Andrew Flintoff's five-and-a-half hour unbeaten century that delayed the follow-on until just before tea.
Having been bundled out for 285 in their first innings, England moved to 145-0 the second time around.
Pedro Collins, with 4-76 in the first innings, was by then out injured.
The home side spurned three opportunities to dislodge Flintoff, any one of which, if taken, might have made it easier for them to put pressure on the tourists.
But West Indies were unlucky that Trescothick was adjudged not out on nought to a Tino Best delivery he clearly gloved down the leg-side to Ridley Jacobs.
But he and Vaughan then got stuck into a groove against Best, Fidel Edwards, Corey Collymore and the various part-time spinners.
Both England openers will be glad to have found their feet at last with the one-day series around the corner.
Collins and his Barbadian half-brother Edwards began the day finding a surprising amount of reverse swing.
Jones played a rash stroke to throw his wicket away early on |
A fast, full delivery from Edwards was too much for Geraint Jones who added just six runs to his overnight score of 36 before having his stumps rudely disturbed.
Gareth Batty lasted nearly an hour before driving Collins to slip, as Flintoff found support from the tail.
And the popular northener then began playing a few more shots, with Edwards getting the treatment as he moved into the nineties with a hooked six and a pull high over midwicket for four.
Simon Jones saw out 50 deliveries and survived being struck a painful blow by Tino Best on the forearm.
And when he was controversially given out lbw to Ryan Hinds, Brian Lara quickly enforced the follow-on - but his remaining fit bowlers soon tired.
