Whitewash and runs on my agenda

By Chris Read
England wicket-keeper in Barbados

The England cricket team partied long and hard into the night after our win in Barbados, but the celebrations are well and truly over now.

I know I've got the ability to score big runs. I just haven't been able to prove it yet

We know there is even more history to be made after we became the first England team to win in the West Indies since 1968.

Whitewashing the Windies is something we'll be trying hard to do, but I have extra incentive to perform in the final Test in Antigua.

It doesn't bother me that people are saying I should be dropped and Geraint Jones given a chance - I know I'm not doing my job with the bat.

I've had a good series behind the stumps and I'm happy with that, but my main priority is to score runs at number seven and I'm not doing it.

I am a bit disappointed with my form because I've felt in pretty good nick with the bat.

I was one of those guys in the third Test who got out once they'd got a start. Myself, Flintoff, Hussain, Vaughan, Giles - we all disappointed after getting in.

But I'm feeling reasonably happy with my form and I'm looking forward to knuckling down and making some runs in Antigua.

I like to think of myself as a genuine all-rounder and I believe my keeping has been very consistent for a number of years now. It's a side of my game I'm very confident with.

I know I've got the ability to score big runs, also. It's just that I haven't been able to prove it yet.

I understand people will want to see Geraint called up, but from my perspective I just hope I'll be given a few more chances.

We had a celebration to remember in Barbados after the third Test

But I'm fully aware of the fact that if I don't start producing then my place is in jeopardy.

But concerns about my situation pale into comparison with what the team has achieved over here.

To win 3-0 inside three days was terrific, and something we obviously set out to do but never dreamed would actually happen.

People have been saying the Windies are no good, but we've played some very good cricket. And we know we can play better.

The bowlers have been absolutely magnificent to take 20 wickets each Test like they have, with such apparent ease.

We'd all like to see some bigger first-innings scores, but players like Thorpe, Butcher and Hussain - who have all been here before - have got us out of some tight spots.

It's been great to make history, but we're a side that's developing and going forward, and this is all part of that.

We know we're not near a team like Australia yet. They whitewashed Sri Lanka recently after we were beaten out there, so there's a big gap to bridge but we're working on that.

It was fortunate that we had the extra two days after the third Test finished early to celebrate.

We spent a long time in the dressing room afterwards and adjourned to the bar by the hotel pool for a few drinks.

We headed out a bit later and were swamped by thousands and thousands of England fans who were enjoying the victory immensely. It was an awesome experience and there were plenty of hangovers the next day.

We're trying to let it all sink in, but the hard work has started again already to get focused for Antigua and make it a clean sweep.

It's the ultimate position to be in and we don't want to let it slip.
