Best win of my career

By Chris Read
England wicket-keeper in Jamaica

What can I say? It was amazing.

I'm suffering for it now but what does a hangover matter when you've just beaten the West Indies by 10 wickets, bowling them out for their lowest Test total in the process?

Michael Vaughan

I don't think any of us believed when we woke up on Sunday we would have won the game by lunchtime.

We were expecting a hard couple of sessions in the field at least so to do what we did was absolutely phenomenal.

We weren't really thinking about their total at first.

If you get on a bit of a roll these things can happen and we were aware that from their number eight batsmen downwards their batting was a little bit fragile.

They have some exceptional batsmen but we managed to get their experienced guys, the likes of Brian Lara, Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, out cheaply.

So when the wickets kept on tumbling I knew something very special could happen out there.

England had been bowled out for 46 by the West Indies in Trinidad 10 years ago so when they were 43-9 we thought it would be great if we could get them out as soon as possible.

I'm sure West Indies are going to come back at us in the next Test
We missed dismissing them for 46 but when we get back into the dressing room we found out that 47 was the West Indies' lowest ever Test total.

Everyone was on a complete high after what we had done and felt quite dazed about the whole thing.

Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick had to try and compose themselves and make sure they went out there and did the job.

It was an amazing feeling to have won in such a manner and for me personally it was the best victory in my career.

I have been involved in some spectacular matches, my debut against New Zealand when we won inside three days was great and there have been a number of really exciting one-day games, but Sunday's win ranks as the best.

Steve Harmison bowled brilliantly but he is very down to earth and has taken his 7-12 in his stride.

I'm sure it will eventually dawn on him what he has done. It is all coming together for him now and it was truly awesome to watch.

We celebrated by having a few beers at the pool at the hotel, where we received a standing ovation from the England fans who were there too!

Suffice to say we have all had Monday off to recover as a few of us were a little worse for wear.

Some managed it onto the golf course but I was just enjoying another lazy day in the sun.

It was an interesting development to hear the West Indies Cricket Board had issued an apology to the fans over the team's performance.

I don't think we should dwell on that as I'm sure they are going to come back at us in the next Test.

Their pride has been hurt and they won't want a repeat performance.

We are not going to be complacent and if we can go to Trinidad with the same disciplines and attitude then we will be hoping to put more pressure on them and go 2-0 up in the series.
