Flintoff relieved over haul
Andrew Flintoff
Flintoff achieved the bowling milestone in his 32nd Test match

Andrew Flintoff spoke of his relief after his first five-wicket haul put England on top after day one of the third Test against West Indies.

The all-rounder returned 5-58 as the Windies were dismissed for just 224.

Flintoff, playing his 32nd Test, said: "I've played a few games now and this is my first five-wicket haul.

"To get five wickets at any time is good, but especially in a Test in Barbados with all the English people out here made it a great feeling."

And he added: "Hopefully I can kick on from here and start taking a few more wickets and chipping in a bit more."

Flintoff led a rousing England comeback in the evening session after the hosts had gone to tea well-placed on 155-3.

The Lancashire player will be on a hat-trick next innings after taking the last two wickets to fall with successive deliveries.

He added: "It was quite embarrassing walking off as it was the first time I'd led the team in when we were fielding.

"I didn't know where to put myself!"

Steve Harmison played a big part in the home capitulation, removing top-scoring Ramnaresh Sarwan for 63 and returning figures of 3-42.

The dismissal of Marcus Trescothick was the only blot on England's day

The pace duo shouldered the load after Matthew Hoggard had left the field before the last interval with a cramped calf muscle.

"It was hot out there today. I think the sun got to Hoggard a little bit and he had to go off and have an ice pack," Flintoff said.

"It was important we got those wickets when we were a bowler light at that stage."

Flintoff removed skipper Brian Lara through a catch by Mark Butcher in the slips, but three other chances went begging, including two off Flintoff's bowling.

"The slips are in there trying their best, and I know I've dropped a few myself over the last couple of years," he said.

"You can't get too disheartened. You've just got to carry on bowling and hope when they get the next nick it gets taken."

Flintoff hopes England, 20-1 at stumps in reply, can post a match-winning total on a pitch that is settling down after appearing very lively early on the first day.

"The pitch did have a bit there for us early on, a bit of bounce and a bit of pace. But there was enough for both bat and ball," he added.

"Hopefully if we can see the new ball off tomorrow and get our heads down we can make a big score."
