James Anderson, back in the England side after a two-game rest, concedes two wides in his first over but then removes Shane Watson in his third when the Australia opener plays on to his stumps
Ryan Sidebottom starts with three wides in a row on his home ground of Trent Bridge but the Nottinghamshire seamer soon gets his radar working again
Anderson brings the crowd to their feet when he has Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, scorer of a magnificent century in the fifth ODI, caught by Sidebottom at long leg for six
But Tim Paine takes control and hits several fluent boundaries, including this reverse sweep, and one big six which flies straight back over the head of the bowler Dimitri Mascarenhas
Matt Prior just fails to reach a chance from new batsman Mike Hussey, causing Mascarenhas (still without a name or a number on his shirt) to hop, skip but ultimately rein in his celebrations
Anything Paine can do, Hussey can do better... Mr Cricket, as Hussey is known, gets stuck into a reverse sweep before smashing two sixes on his way to bringing up his half century
Paine, playing in his seventh one-day international, brings up his century off 130 balls and Australia, on 181-2 after 36 overs, look set to post a big total
Graeme Swann, who replaced Adil Rashid in the team, finally makes the breakthrough after a stand of 163 when Hussey finds Joe Denly in the deep and is out for 65
And in the next over, the 41st, Paine's innings also comes to an end when, on 111, he tries to whack Mascarenhas for a big hit but only manages to edge the ball to a delighted Prior
Anderson lives up to his nickname of the Burnley Express by dismissing Callum Ferguson for six and then Cameron White for 35 to finish with figures of 4-55 from his 10 overs
Anderson's direct hit from the long-on boundary sees off Brett Lee for a duck but James Hopes clubs 38 off 22 balls to help Australia finish their 50 overs on an imposing 296-8
The second ball of England's reply and controversy reigns when skipper Andrew Strauss is given out caught behind by Asad Rauf, only for the replays to show the ball hit Strauss's shoulder and not his bat
Joe Denly hits a six and three fours as England look to rebuild following Strauss's early departure, but Hopes ends his innings on 25 when he skies a catch to Lee
Ponting may have failed with the bat but he still makes his mark on the match, producing a stunning piece of fielding to run out Matt Prior for six with a direct hit
Bopara survives this close call but, just five balls after Prior's wicket falls, is also run out after attempting a suicidal single to the prowling Ponting in the covers
Owais Shah, who comes in after Eoin Morgan departs for 23, struggles to get going and holes out to Watson for another 23 and England are in deep trouble on 114-6
Mascarenhas hits one maximum before he has to trudge back to the pavilion after Hopes bowls him for 11 - England are now 125-7 and staring a humiliating defeat in the face
Seamer Nathan Bracken collects his second wicket cleaning up Graeme Swann before Ryan Sidebottom perishes in similar fashion to Peter Siddle
With the game well and truly lost, England belatedly take their batting powerplay - Tim Bresnan and Ryan Sidebottom entertain the crowd with some cheerful hitting before Sidebottom is bowled by Peter Siddle for 15
Last man James Anderson is yorked by Brett Lee to leave England 185 all out, beaten by 111 runs - and Strauss now has to lift his side at Chester-le-Street on Sunday to avoid an unprecedented 7-0 whitewash
