Umar produced a classy innings

Umar Akmal's maiden international ton coupled with 5-30 from Iftikhar Anjum helped Pakistan to a 146-run win over Sri Lanka in the fourth one-day match.

Umar's unbeaten 102 came from only 72 balls as both he and captain Younus Khan put on 176 together to ease the tourists to a testing 321-5.

After a promising start, Sri Lanka lost their last eight wickets for 45 runs thanks largely to Iftikhar's swing.

Sri Lanka lead 3-1 in the five-match one-day series.

Younus won the toss and elected to bat first, but his side certainly did not look like a side that would post a big score after they found themselves 130-4.

Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Yousuf and Misbah-ul-Haq all fell in a 24-run spell, before Umar arrived at the crease to help Younus steady the ship.

Their 176 was a record fifth-wicket partnership for Pakistan in one-day matches, eclipsing the previous best - 155 between Mohammad Yousuf and Younus in 2002.

Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga had a poor day conceding a remarkable 26 wides.

Captain Younus paid tribute to 19-year-old Umar.

"We've always been talking about building partnerships and accumulating runs and today we clicked," he said.

"We did lose a couple of quick wickets, but Umar and I hung in there and got the runs. It wasn't easy because it was hot and humid.

"Umar was fantastic today and its always pleasing to see a young player moving up the ranks.

"In maybe two or three years several players in this team are not going to be around and it's always pleasing to know when you move on that you've left Pakistan cricket in good hands."

The hosts began the epic chase well, with opener Mahela Jayawardene hitting two fours and a six for a run-a-ball 19 before he was caught by Mohammad Aamer off seamer Naved-ul-Hasan to leave the hosts on 36-1 in the sixth over.

Kumar Sangakkara then fell for 39 off 33 balls, when he was caught by Imran Nazir off Iftikhar Anjum.

By that stage the home side were on a comfortable 101-2, before the collapse began, with Iftikhar causing the most damage.

His dismissal of dangerman Upul Tharanga (80) virtually ended what resistance Sri Lanka put up.
