Worcestershire 'demoralised'

Worcestershire captain Ben Smith spoke of his dismay after his side were thrashed by Gloucestershire in the C&G Trophy final.

After bowling their cross-Cotswolds rivals out for 149, Gloucestershire cruised to victory with almost 30 overs to spare.

"I don't think anyone in the dressing room is happy," he said.

"When you play all season to have a day like this it's very demoralising.

"We came in full of confidence. We've played well with the red ball all year. Even in close games we've known we can do the job.

"But today was out of the ordinary."

Worcestershire started well and racked up 62 runs in the first 15 overs, but a brilliant run-out by South African star Jonty Rhodes dismissed Vikram Solanki for 40.

It was the first of six wickets in 11 overs.

"We couldn't have started better. We had a good platform to build on but it never happened," Smith added.

"They put the squeeze on us, brought the fielders in close and Jonty Rhodes makes a big difference at backward point - it's like having two fielders."

Worcestershire's miserable day was compounded when wicket-keeper Steve Rhodes tore an intercostal muscle while batting.

Gloucestershire sportingly allowed reserve gloveman Jamie Pipe, who was at the ground working for local radio, to replace Rhodes.

But the absence of the veteran for at least four weeks could hit Worcestershire hard in the final weeks of their drive for the county championship Division Two title.

However, Smith does not expect the one-day loss to affect the side's confidence in four-day cricket, and he believes the pain of defeat could be the impetus for a return to Lord's.

"In the championship if you have a bad day you can claw it back but if you have a bad 10 of 15 overs like we did today it's difficult to claw back," he explained.

"It will sink in what we've missed out on.

"A lot of people felt Worcestershire should have come to Lord's more in the last five years with the team we've had but this might make the difference."
