Gloucs overwhelm Worcs

A typically ruthless one-day performance by Gloucestershire secured their sixth knockout trophy in five years, and presented their coach, John Bracewell, with the perfect send-off.

The game was over by 4.10pm, leaving a large, somewhat bemused crowd with nothing to do but to bask in the late summer sunshine.

Worcestershire really had a dreadful day - one of those that simply do you no favours at all.

Put in to bat, they made a good start reaching 64 for no wicket, but the first run out of their innings saw off Vikram Solanki for an attractive 40 and when Graeme Hick lazily drove a catch to cover fourth ball, the wickets started to tumble.

This is where Gloucester are so impressive - they rarely miss an opportunity to tighten the noose.

Jonty Rhodes' fielding was absolutely brilliant - he was causing dreadful uncertainty in the batsmen's minds - and it was inevitable another run out would effectively seal Worcestershire's fate.

It was the captain, Ben Smith, who was despatched for 12 and his team lost three wickets for four runs.

Batty and Rhodes added 37, but in the course of their partnership, Rhodes pulled a muscle in his side which prevented him from being able to keep wicket.

The tail fell over in a heap, and could not even manage to complete their 50 overs.

It was obvious Gloucester's tactics would be to make the most of the first 15 overs and knock off as many of their target in that time - and they only failed by 20 runs to finish the game!

Craig Spearman made 10, but Phil Weston played some glorious strokes through the off-side to score 46 from 50 balls.

However, it was Harvey who produced a sensational exhibition of big hitting.

He thrashed eight fours in 11 balls, and struck Gareth Batty for 20 runs in one over before being stumped by the stand-in keeper, James Pipe.

Harvey's 61 came from only 36 balls and was the clear winner of the man of the match award.
