Trescothick's strokeplay knocked the stuffing out of Pakistan More match photos

James Anderson and Marcus Trescothick provided the inspiration as England levelled the series with a crushing victory.

Anderson picked up the first one-day hat-trick by an England bowler to polish off the Pakistan innings and Trescothick then treated the crowd to a brilliant innings of 86 off 55 balls.

The Somerset left-hander smashed two sixes - the second impudently flicked over the head of first slip off Shoaib Akhtar - and 16 fours as England raced towards their modest target.

Shoaib picked up the wickets of Michael Vaughan and Jim Troughton, but Vikram Solanki hinted he may have a long-term international future by helping steer England home with 40 not out.

He soon had reason to rue his decision as Anderson and Andrew Flintoff exposed flaws in the techniques of Nazir and Old Trafford Man of the Match Mohammad Hafeez.

They were both lbw in similar fashion, playing around the pad after planting their front foot down the wrong line.

Darren Gough hastened Pakistan's slide by forcing Yasir Hameed to play on for 28 and having Younis Khan caught behind next ball - Chris Read's first victim for England since February 2000.

Having subsided to 80-6, Pakistan finally offered some resistance as Azhar Mahmood joined Yousuf Youhana in a stand of 72.

Mahmood eventually fell to Surrey team-mate Rikki Clarke for 30, and Youhana was left high and dry on 75 not out as Anderson swept away the tail.

First Abdul Razzaq drilled a catch to Marcus Trescothick at mid-off, then Shoaib was sent on his way as Read accepted a regulation outside edge.

Last man Sami could not cope with a low full toss for the hat-trick ball as Anderson repeated his treble for Lancashire against Essex earlier in the season.

Any thoughts Pakistan had of similar destruction by their bowlers soon disappeared as Trescothick launched the reply with a barrage of magnificent shots.

Shoaib's second over cost 18 and he took three fours in one over from Mahmood and four from another by Sami after being dropped on 30 at backward square leg.

Solanki contributed only eight to an opening stand of 109, which came to an end when Trescothick top edged an attempted pull and Latif took the catch.

Shoaib could hardly believe it when Solanki was caught behind off a no-ball and then dropped at slip by Younis Khan, before removing Vaughan (10) and Troughton (0) in the space of three overs.

The tone had been well and truly set, however, and Flintoff belted 26 off 13 balls to finish the game for England with 28 overs to spare.
