Klitschko wanted to fight on |
Vitali Klitschko is calling for a rematch with Lennox Lewis after a bad cut ended his challenge for the WBC heavyweight title. The Ukrainian needed multiple stitches in the wound above his left eye after the fight was stopped by ringside doctor Paul Wallace.
Klitschko was ahead on points when the bout was declared over, having got the better of a lethargic-looking Lewis in the early rounds.
Speaking to Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme, he said: "I'm really disappointed that the doctor stopped the fight.
"I was ready to continue and I am sure I would have won."
"Lennox Lewis is a very good fighter, but he was not really in the best condition and I was feeling very confident.
Roy Jones Jnr has been calling Lennox out, so that is a possibility Promoter Gary Shaw on Lewis' next fight |
"So now I am looking for a rematch, and I hope I will have the chance to fight Lennox Lewis again." American promoter Gary Shaw, also speaking on Sportsweek, confirmed a second fight could happen "if the money is right".
But he said Lewis could opt to meet Roy Jones Jnr, who stepped up from light-heavyweight to take John Ruiz's WBA heavyweight title.
Shaw said: "Roy Jones Jnr has been calling Lennox out, so that is a possibility."
Asked whether Jones would rate his chances after seeing Lewis struggle against Klitschko, Shaw added: "Yes, absolutely - Roy's probably thinking he'll have his day."
