Gebrselassie was off the record pace |
Haile Gebrselassie ran the fastest 3,000 metres of the indoor season but failed to break the world record in Karlsruhe. The Ethiopian clocked seven minutes, 28.29 seconds to lead an Ethiopian sweep, but he was well off the world indoor mark of 7:25.90 held by Kenya's Daniel Komen since 1998.
"It's still a fantastic time, Gebrselassie said. "I know I can improve it."
Abiyote Abate was second in 7:40.75, with Markos Geneti third in 7:40.83.
Britain's Colin Jackson narrowly avoided disqualification and then just as narrowly lost to Cuban Olympic champion Anier Garcia in the 60m hurdles.
Garcia won in 7.47 seconds and Jackson, in his last race before the world indoor championship next month in Birmingham, was second in 7.49.
The race had two false starts and Jackson had the second, which should have normally drawn a disqualification according to new rules.
But the officials allowed Jackson to run.
Aldama is adamant she wants to represent Britain |
Yamile Aldama, the Cuban triple jumper seeking British citizenship, scored a fantastic victory. The 30-year-old, who is married to a Scot, produced the longest jump in the world this year to win with 14.88 metres.
Aldama proved an easy winner ahead of Magdelin Martinez and Francoise Mbango of Cameroon.
Yet the runner-up - also Cuban born but now representing Italy - produced a national record for her country with a leap of 14.61m.
In other events, Kenyan teenager Cornelius Chirchir won the men's 1,500 with a meeting record time of 3:34.85.
Lars Boergeling of Germany cleared 5.73 metres to win the men's pole vault.
