  3. 'Squad dealt with poor start well'published at 22:24 BST 3 April

Northampton Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson, speaking to Premier Sports: "The maturity of this squad is we can start poorly and then get ourselves back into the game so I was very pleased how we recovered.

"We never thought we were on top of them, we never got away from them in the scoreline, never really managed to deal with the restarts. I never felt the yellow cards were an opportunity, and they played with 14 very well.

"Credit to Castres, we want to play fast and so do they so you get a very open game.

"There are huge elements of our game we want to get better, elements of our set piece have to be better. We will get to work on that on Monday."

Northampton winger Tommy Freeman, speaking to Premier Sports:

"We definitely could have moved a bit better in that second half. We know our attack can go well when we're firing but our defence has really got to step up if we want to keep going forward in this competition and keep these other teams out."

Centre Fraser Dingwall on the quarter-finals: "We'd always prefer to be back at home of course [Saints will play at home if Saracens beat Bath] but it will be an exciting game whoever it is. It's kind of cool that it'll be an all-English affair."

Northampton Saints full-back George Furbank, speaking to Premier Sports:

"We seemed to put some good things on them and then coughed up the ball and they capitalised on it. They're a dangerous side. But it's good to get a win at home again.

"We feel like we've got the team and the coaching staff to go all the way and I don't think we were a million miles off last year. A few injuries and things didn't go our way in that final.

"We'll watch Bath and Saracens and see where we are next week."

Saints' one and only European Cup triumph, in 2000, saw them win 9-8 with all their points coming from the boot of one Paul Grayson.

The chances of that kind of a scoreboard look somewhere between slim and none on current evidence.

There are a few more smiles in the Northampton squad now after they have a huddle/debrief. Castres are taking some deserved acclaim as well.

They rode their luck at times but their ability with ball in hand, to create space, manipulate it and then finish, is second to none in England.

A brilliant home win and a great start to the weekend. Sit back and relax and watch everybody else scrap it out, knowing you've got yourselves in that last eight.

It was a game effort from Castres, they definitely came here to win and Northampton bested them to send the crowd home happy.

Huge respect between the two sides, and rightly so. Northampton are worthy winners but they have had to give everything, and there are a few Saints players having some intense conversations amongst themselves.

I wonder if this might have taken a lot out of them with the last eight looming?

The fans have been treated to a feast tonight. Castres made everyone very nervous with their physical threat and their ability to put genuine pace into the game, they've tested Northampton, but the crowd trust their team - they've been playing like this for a while.

    What a way to finish!

Christian Ambadiang collects a cross kick on halfway to race away, clutching the ball in one hand Fijian-sevens-style to go in under the posts.

It's another messy lineout, and Castres kick clear but Northampton start to edge downfield again. Going over 50 points would make a statement.

Castres are still piling in despite being down to 14 players, but more recklessness on halfway gives Saints a penalty that they kick to the corner.

My prediction about possible late kicking drama came to naught, but that's fine because this has been an thrilling half of rugby.

    Fraser Dingwall (Con: Belleau)

Saints make the most of the man advantage, Anthony Belleau looping a miss pass over to Fraser Dingwall, who touches down for a try that may seal the deal for the hosts.

Belleau lands a tricky kick to nail extend the lead to 15 - he's converted six of Northampton's tries, the other was a penalty try.
