A first Olympic competitor has fallen ill after sailing in Guanabara Bay. Belgium's Evi van Acker, a 2012 bronze medallist, reported feeling sick after Wednesday's races, governing body World Sailing said. (AP)

Simone Manuel, 20, became the first black female swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal when she won joint gold with Canada's Penny Oleksiak in the women's 100m freestyle final.

Afterwards, she spoke of sharing a name with USA team-mate and fellow Texan Simone Biles, who has won two golds in the gymnastics, saying: "Simone Biles and I are practically the same person. She's super-cool. We both bring gold medals back to Houston, Texas.

"When we're in the same room it's very difficult to have a conversation because we don't know who is talking to which Simone."

After Michael Phelps became the first swimmer to win four successive Olympic gold medals in one event, retired Australian great Ian Thorpe described the American as "exceptional".

A commentator for Canada's CBC channel issued an apology after he got Phelps and Ryan Lochte mixed up in their 200m individual medley final. Phelps won his 22nd Olympic gold medal but Elliotte Friedman gave the race to Lochte, who finished fifth.

Ibtihaj set up a crowdfunding project to help get all five members of the Muhammad family to Rio. The result?
