Reed keeps his cool and goes into moving day in the lead.
-4 Reed
-3 DeChambeau
-2 Cabrera Bello, English, Thomas
-1 Kokrak
E Pieters, Schauffele, Wolff, Todd, Matsuyama
-2 Thomas; +7 Morikawa; +10 Woods (F)
A chance to end the day with a birdie for Justin Thomas. This is for three under, but no. He started day two on five under and ended it on two under.
Collin Morikawa misses a birdie attempt and that leaves him on seven over. He now faces an agonising wait as the last few players may not finish today and may have to come back tomorrow morning.
There are currently 63 players on six over or better, but not all of those have finished. So those on seven over will have to sit, wait and hope.
Woods ends with a birdie, despite an excursion to the sand, but that's 10 over and he's gone.
-4 Reed (F)
A few words from our leader Patrick Reed, after his level-par 70: "Yesterday was soft, benign and the pins were more accessible. It's as though the USGA set up the course to ease us in and then show us what it's really like.
"You had to shoot low yesterday because you knew today was going to be brutal."
+11 Woods (17*)
Woods' final approach shot of the 2020 US Open - and it ends up in the sand.
+3 McIlroy (F)
Rory McIlroy is setting his birdie putt out four feet to the right of the hole. It's about right, just not quite enough pace on the putt and it's a fifth successive par to finish.
He looks a little grumpy but I suspect when he analyses his card he'll be chuffed he's only seven back. It could have been so much worse.
Still, it's a six-over 76.
+3 McIlroy (17)
It's been a familiar sight for the last hour or so. Rory McIlroy in the centre of the fairway with his ball at his feet.
Can he get this one in close? It's straight over the top of the flag, will it feed back down towards the hole? Not much.
Another lengthy birdie putt coming up...
-2 Thomas (17*)
Justin Thomas is on his last (the ninth) and pulls his tee shot wide right, but wide of the bunkers. He's on two under and tied third. A birdie would move him up to tied second.
-4 Reed (F)
Patrick Reed has had a good look at his bunker shot on the ninth. He shuffles his feet to wedge himself into the sand and flicks a majestic wedge out to six feet.
Can he finish in style and take the halfway lead?
It's quick, downhill and straight in the front door. Great finish.
Meanwhile, 2015 champion Jordan Spieth is finishing up. He started the hole on 14 over par and he will finish on that score.
+11 Woods (17*)
What a recovery from Woods, deep in the bunker, now he's less than two feet from what looked an improbable par and he makes it. A good save.
It looks like not everyone is going to be able to complete their rounds tonight before it gets too dark. It could well be an early Saturday for a few of them.
+11 Woods (16*)
Rough, then sand. Another bad hole for Woods. It's his penultimate one in this year's tournament.
+3 McIlroy, +8 Rose (17)
Justin Rose has a huge par putt on the 17th. The 2013 US Open champion is at seven over and with that miss looks set to miss the cut, which looks set to come at six over.
His playing partner Rory McIlroy has another lengthy birdie chance. Up the hill, left to right at the death and his ball dies a couple of revolutions short. Another par chalked off though.
-3 Reed (17*)
One last drive of the day for Reed and he's only gone and knocked it in the second cut of rough - the four inch deep stuff - that will make it mighty hard to reach the green in two.
The lie is decent and he's given it a big old thwack from 257 yards. It's a low chaser but it's not going to trouble the green, instead hopping into a bunker.
He's scrambled well today though so a birdie finish is still very much in the offing.
+11 Woods (16*)
It won't matter in terms of whether he makes the cut or not - he won't - but Tiger Woods has a birdie to his name on the par-three seventh after a near-perfect shot off the tee.
-2 Thomas (16*)
Justin Thomas was top at the start of the day, and a wonderful long-range putt on the seventh moves him to two under, one stroke off the lead.
-3 Reed (17*)
Patrick Reed can't nail his birdie putt on the eighth but it's inches for par.
He's going to a good place now though, the par-five ninth. It's only 557 yards and is, statistically, the easiest hole of the day.
It's given up four eagles - his co-leader Bryson DeChambeau finished with one a few hours ago - and plenty of birdies today.
Can Reed claw back his one shot lead in his final hole?
-3 DeChambeau (F), Reed (17*)
-2 Cabrera Bello (F), English (F)
-1 Kokrak (F), Thomas (15*)
E Pieters (F), Schauffele (F), Wolff (F), Todd (F)
