Read the US Open day one report here.

There will also be some highlights available on the website, shots and round of the day among them. I reckon they may well contain the two holes-in-one...

  3. Leaderboard after day onepublished at 23:57 BST 17 September 2020

    -5 Justin Thomas (US)

-4 Patrick Reed (US), Thomas Pieters (Bel), Matthew Wolff (US)

-3 Rory McIlroy (NI), Lee Westwood (Eng), Louis Oosthuizen (SA)

-2 Jason Kokrak (US), Brendon Todd (US), Harris English (US), Rafa Cabrera Bello (Sp), Joaquin Niemann (Chi), Xander Schauffele (US)

  4. A great start to your US Open careerpublished at 23:50 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Wolff (F)

As first ever days playing in the US Open go, it has been a pretty special Thursday for American Matthew Wolff.

He downs a three-footer to par the last and that's a round of four under, one off the lead and tied second. Well played, sir.

  5. Fowler and Wolff finish with parspublished at 23:50 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Wolff (F), -1 Fowler (F)

Rickie Fowler has hit 14 of the 18 greens in regulation today. It would have been 15 if his approach to the last not dribbled just off the edge.

And that gives you an indication of how well he's played, until he's got on the greens but he's down in two for a par from there.

Playing partner Matthew Wolff is a touch closer, similar line from the right side of the green. Has he learnt anything from Fowler's effort? Not enough. But that will be a par finish too.

  6. Schauffele three off leadpublished at 23:46 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Schauffele (F)

Xander Schauffele is a little aggressive with a 12-foot birdie putt at the last but he confidently drains the return to open with a two-under-par 68.

The American will be satisfied with his opening day's work and will be off earlier in Friday's second round.

  7. Mickelson in bottom three after horror roundpublished at 23:40 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Rahm; +9 Mickelson (F)

Jon Rahm misses to the right a birdie putt attempt on the last so that's one under for the world number two, four strokes off the lead.

Phil Mickelson drops another shot on the last and that is a nine-over horror show.

Out of a field of 144 players, there are only two men doing worse than the five-time Major winner - Australian amateur Lukas Michel and 23-year-old American Davis Riley, who are both on 10 over.

  8. Fowler bogeypublished at 23:39 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Fowler (17)

Rickie Fowler's woes on the greens continue. A six-foot par putt sidles by on the left without so much as a look at the hole.

He's back to one under - in any other US Open that would be a terrific opening round but you get the feeling he's going to be a bit peeved at some of the putts he's missed today.

He's not out of it but after being three under after six holes...

  9. Postpublished at 23:32 BST 17 September 2020

    +8 Mickelson (18)

Phil Mickelson's stats make painful reading as he has only hit two fairways all day. That could well be why he is going to really struggle to make the cut. He then goes from some rough on the left side of the 18th to some rough on the right side.

He needs the US Open to complete the Grand Slam set. He's not going to get it this year.

  10. DJ ends with parpublished at 23:30 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +3 Johnson (F)

As Bryson DeChambeau was lining up his putt, gravity tugged his ball down a slope and a few feet closer to the hole. Can he take advantage?

All three men are pontificating over who should play first. It's Bryson. Upright stance, left shoulder high, pendulum swing of the arms but he's a couple of feet short.

Tony Finau's putt is across the green but a little straighter. He can't hole it though from 20 feet.

Come on DJ, finish with a flourish. He's only 10 feet away but has about three-times the borrow of his playing partners. The ball misses on the low side.

    Tap-in pars all round.

  11. Postpublished at 23:23 BST 17 September 2020

Bryson DeChambeau hits another towering short iron into a green. It's his 18th and final hole. Heart of the green, 25 feet beyond the pin.

Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson are also on the dancefloor. Who needs a birdie the most?

  12. Postpublished at 23:22 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Rahm (17)

Jon Rahm has a putt from 19 feet to grab a birdie and move back inside the top 10, but, agonisingly, it drifts away at the end so he stays on one under coming up to the last.

  13. Schauffele droppingpublished at 23:20 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Schauffele (17*)

A rare missed putt from Xander Schauffele on the par-four eighth and he's back to two under.

It was a 10-footer that never looked like it was going in. Still, he's got a par-five finishing hole to make amends.

  14. Defending champion finishespublished at 23:18 BST 17 September 2020

    +4 Woodland (F)

Defending champion Gary Woodland is signing for a first-round 74.

The American was one under after nine holes, but had two bogeys and two doubles on the back nine to finish four over. He's not out of it, but you feel he's got to go under par tomorrow to give himself half a chance.

He was playing with Open champion Shane Lowry - the Irishman fared a little worse, carding a six-over 76.

  15. Bogey for DeChambeaupublished at 23:14 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +3 Johnson (17)

Bryson DeChambeau is moving, but in the wrong direction. A pulled par putt on the 17th sees him drop back to one under. He stalks off the green.

I bet Dustin Johnson would swap places in a hearbeat. The world number one has not got going today but he rolls in from three feet for par.

Tony Finau appears to have double bogeyed. The cameras didn't show it. I'm trying to work it out off the scoreboard...

As I type that, the cameras show him missing a five-foot par putt but tapping in a bogey. It's late, perhaps the scoreboard is tired.

  16. Postpublished at 23:12 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Wolff (16)

It's been a great day so far for 21-year-old American Matthew Wolff, in his first ever day of US Open action.

Three birdies in a row, from 11th to 13th, took him to four under and he narrowly misses a long-range attempt, which would have been a spectacular putt and one that would have given him a share of the lead.

But he's still close enough to then claim par. Two holes to go. Will he end the day inside the top 10? He's tied second at the moment.

  17. Postpublished at 23:05 BST 17 September 2020

    +6 Casey (16)

Paul Casey came up with his first birdie of the day at the 15th, but his celebrations only last a few minutes as he bogeys the 16th to return to six over.

  18. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 23:03 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Rahm (16)

That dodgy shot off the tee that left Jon Rahm shooting between a couple of trees proves costly as he comes up with the first bogey in his back nine.

He is now only on one under and falls out of the top 10.

  19. Schauffele finishing stronglypublished at 23:02 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Schauffele (16*), -2 Fowler (15)

Xander Schauffele is going about his business nice and quietly. He rolls in his fourth birdie of the day, from 14 feet on the par-three seventh to get up to three under.

The American has two holes to play, the last of which is a birdie opportunity.

But what about Rickie Fowler? Another birdie chance goes begging - this time from eight feet on the 15th. He's staying at two under and has, arguably, a tougher finish.

  20. Westwood level with McIlroypublished at 22:57 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Westwood (F)

Oh hello Lee Westwood. A final-hole birdie ends a great round for the Englishman, who moves level with Rory McIlroy on three under par.

He holes a putt from a dozen feet for his fifth birdie of the day. Solid.

"I don't think they have to toughen it up too much," he said. "I'm sure they can go a bit harder with the flags but it's not going to get any easier."
